Measurement of the emittance of accelerated electron bunches at the AWAKE experiment / AWAKE Collaboration
The vertical plane transverse emittance of accelerated electron bunches at the AWAKE experiment at CERN has been determined, using three different methods of data analysis. [...]

Experimental Observation of Motion of Ions in a Resonantly Driven Plasma Wakefield Accelerator / AWAKE Collaboration
We show experimentally that an effect of motion of ions, observed in a plasma-based accelerator, depends inversely on the plasma ion mass. [...]

Elevating electron energy gain and betatron X-ray emission in proton-driven wakefield acceleration / Saberi, Hossein (Manchester U. ; Daresbury) ; Xia, Guoxing (Manchester U. ; Daresbury) ; Liang, Linbo (Manchester U. ; Daresbury) ; Farmer, John Patrick (CERN ; Munich, Max Planck Inst.) ; Pukhov, Alexander (Heinrich Heine U., Dusseldorf)
The long proton beams present at CERN have the potential to evolve into a train of microbunches through the self-modulation instability process. The resonant wakefield generated by a periodic train of proton microbunches can establish a high acceleration field within the plasma, facilitating electron acceleration. [...]

Hosing of a long relativistic particle bunch in plasma / AWAKE Collaboration
Experimental results show that hosing of a long particle bunch in plasma can be induced by wakefields driven by a short, misaligned preceding bunch. Hosing develops in the plane of misalignment, self-modulation in the perpendicular plane, at frequencies close to the plasma electron frequency, and are reproducible. [...]

Filamentation of a Relativistic Proton Bunch in Plasma / AWAKE Collaboration
We show in experiments that a long, underdense, relativistic proton bunch propagating in plasma undergoes the oblique instability, that we observe as filamentation. We determine a threshold value for the ratio between the bunch transverse size and plasma skin depth for the instability to occur. [...]

Characteristics of betatron radiation in AWAKE Run 2 experiment / Liang, Linbo (Manchester U. ; SLAC, SSRL) ; Saberi, Hossein (Manchester U. ; SLAC, SSRL) ; Xia, Guoxing (Manchester U. ; SLAC, SSRL) ; Farmer, John Patrick (CERN ; Munich, Max Planck Inst.) ; Pukhov, Alexander (Heinrich Heine U., Dusseldorf)
The oscillating relativistic electrons in the accelerating/focusing wakefields of plasma accelerators emit electromagnetic radiation known as betatron radiation (BR). The proton-driven plasma wakefield acceleration has been demonstrated in the Advanced Wakefield Experiment (AWAKE) at CERN; however, its accompanying radiation emission is less explored compared with those in the laser- and electron beam-driven plasma accelerators. Development of the Self-Modulation Instability of a Relativistic Proton Bunch in Plasma / AWAKE Collaboration
Self-modulation is a beam-plasma instability that is useful to drive large-amplitude wakefields with bunches much longer than the plasma skin depth. We present experimental results showing that, when increasing the ratio between the initial transverse size of the bunch and the plasma skin depth, the instability occurs later along the bunch, or not at all, over a fixed plasma length, because the amplitude of the initial wakefields decreases. [...]

Acceleration of an Electron Bunch with a Non–Gaussian Transverse Profile in Proton-Driven Plasma Wakefield / Liang, Linbo (Manchester U. ; Daresbury) ; Xia, Guoxing (Manchester U. ; Daresbury) ; Pukhov, Alexander (Heinrich Heine U., Dusseldorf) ; Farmer, John Patrick (CERN ; Munich, Max Planck Inst.)
Beam-driven plasma wakefield accelerators typically use the external injection scheme to ensure controllable beam quality at injection. However, the externally injected witness bunch may exhibit a non-Gaussian transverse density distribution. [...]

Electron Witness Constraints for AWAKE / Farmer, John P (Munich, Max Planck Inst. ; CERN) ; Gschwendtner, Edda (CERN) ; Liang, Linbo (Manchester U.) ; Muggli, Patric (Munich, Max Planck Inst.) ; Weidl, Martin (Garching, Max Planck Inst.)
The AWAKE project at CERN successfully demonstrated the use of a proton driver to accelerate an electron witness in plasma*. One of the key goals for AWAKE Run2 is to better control this acceleration, separating the proton-beam-modulation and electron-acceleration stages in order to achieve high energy electrons with high beam quality. The AWAKE Run 2 programme and beyond / AWAKE Collaboration
Plasma wakefield acceleration is a promising technology to reduce the size of particle accelerators. Use of high energy protons to drive wakefields in plasma has been demonstrated during Run 1 of the AWAKE programme at CERN. [...]
