Fractons and D-branes / Kachru, Shamit (speaker) (Stanford University)
I discuss field theories of fractons, with a focus on the role of foliated field theories and field theories with exotic symmetry in their construction. I then turn to the realization — on systems of branes in string theory — of several novel theories of this sort..

Bianchi Attractors: A Classification of Extremal Black Brane Geometries / Iizuka, Norihiro (CERN) ; Kachru, Shamit (Stanford U., ITP ; SLAC) ; Kundu, Nilay (Tata Inst.) ; Narayan, Prithvi (Tata Inst.) ; Sircar, Nilanjan (Tata Inst.) ; Trivedi, Sandip P. (Tata Inst.)
Extremal black branes are of interest because they correspond to the ground states of field theories at finite charge density in gauge/gravity duality. The geometry of such a brane need not be translationally invariant in the spatial directions along which it extends. [...]

Holography of Dyonic Dilaton Black Branes / Goldstein, Kevin (Witwatersrand U.) ; Iizuka, Norihiro (CERN) ; Kachru, Shamit (Stanford U., Phys. Dept. ; SLAC) ; Prakash, Shiroman (Tata Inst.) ; Trivedi, Sandip P. (Tata Inst.) ; Westphal, Alexander (Stanford U., Phys. Dept. ; SLAC)
We study black branes carrying both electric and magnetic charges in Einstein-Maxwell theory coupled to a dilaton-axion in asymptotically anti de Sitter space. After reviewing and extending earlier results for the case of electrically charged branes, we characterise the thermodynamics of magnetically charged branes. [...]

CMBPol Mission Concept Study: Probing Inflation with CMB Polarization / Baumann, Daniel (Harvard U., Phys. Dept. ; Harvard U. ; Princeton U.) ; Jackson, Mark G. We summarize the utility of precise cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization measurements as probes of the physics of inflation. We focus on the prospects for using CMB measurements to differentiate various inflationary mechanisms. [...]

Orientifolds, Renormalization-group Flows And Closed String Tachyons / Kachru, S ; Kumar, J ; Silverstein, E
Summary: We discuss the fate of certain tachyonic closed string theories from two perspectives. In both cases our approach involves directly studying configurations with a finite negative tree-level cosmological constant. [...]

A Preshower Photon Multiplicity Detector for the WA98 Experiment / Aggarwal, M M ; Agnihotri, A ; Ahammed, Z ; Baba, P V K S ; Badyal, S K ; Bhalla, K B ; Bhatia, V S ; Chattopadhyay, S ; Das, A C ; Dutta-Majumdar, M R et al.
A high granularity preshower detector has been fabricated and installed in the WA98 Experiment at the CERN SPS for measuring the spatial distribution of photons produced in the forward region in lead ion induced interactions. Photons are counted by detecting the preshower signal in plastic scintillator pads placed behind a 3 radiation length thick lead converter and applying a threshold on the scintillator signal to reject the minimum ionizing particles. Nonperturbative results on the point particle limit of N=2 heterotic string compactifications / Kachru, S (Harvard Univ., Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA) ; Klemm, A D (CERN) ; Lerche, Wolfgang (CERN) ; Mayr, Peter (CERN) ; Vafa, C (Harvard Univ., Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA)
Using heterotic/type II string duality, we obtain exact nonperturbative results for the point particle limit (alpha' -> 0) of some particular four dimensional, N=2 supersymmetric compactifications of heterotic strings. This allows us to recover recent exact nonperturbative results on N=2 gauge theory directly from tree-level type II string theory, which provides a highly non-trivial, quantitative check on the proposed string duality.
