Analyzing, Identifying & Alerting on Network Issues
/ Vasileva, Petya (Michigan U. ; Plovdiv U.) ; Babik, Marian (CERN) ; McKee, Shawn (Michigan U.) ; Vukotic, Ilija (Chicago U.)
The Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) relies on the network as a critical part of its infrastructure and therefore needs to guarantee effective network usage and prompt detection and resolution of any network issues, including connection failures, congestion, and traffic routing. In this paper, we will describe our ongoing work to proactively analyze, correlate and alert on various network and infrastructure issues. [...]

Identifying and Understanding Scientific Network Flows
/ Research Networking Technical Working Group Collaboration
The High-Energy Physics (HEP) and Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) communities have faced significant challenges in understanding their global network flows across the world’s research and education (R&E;) networks. This article describes the status of the work carried out to tackle this challenge by the Research Technical Networking Working Group (RNTWG) and the Scientific Network Tags (Scitags) initiative, including the evolving framework and tools, as well as our plans to improve network visibility before the next WLCG Network Data Challenge in early 2024. Overcoming obstacles to IPv6 on WLCG
/ Babik, Marian (CERN) ; Bly, Martin (Rutherford) ; Buraglio, Nick (LBL, Berkeley) ; Chown, Tim (JISC) ; Christidis, Dimitrios (CERN) ; Chudoba, Jiri (Prague, Inst. Phys.) ; DeMar, Phil (Fermilab) ; Molina, José Flix (Madrid, CIEMAT) ; Grigoras, Costin (CERN) ; Hoeft, Bruno (KIT, Karlsruhe) et al.
The transition of the Worldwide Large Hadron Collider Computing Grid (WLCG) storage services to dual-stack IPv6/IPv4 is almost complete; all Tier-1 and 94% of Tier-2 storage are IPv6 enabled. While most data transfers now use IPv6, a significant number of IPv4 transfers still occur even when both endpoints support IPv6. [...]

IPv6-only networking on WLCG
/ Babik, Marian (CERN) ; Bly, Martin (Rutherford) ; Chown, Tim ; Christidis, Dimitrios (Texas U., Arlington (main)) ; Chudoba, Jiři ; Condurache, Catalin ; Finnern, Thomas ; Froy, Terry ; Grigoras, Costin ; Hafeez, Kashif et al.
The use of IPv6 on the general Internet continues to grow. The transition of the Worldwide Large Hadron Collider Computing Grid (WLCG) central and storage services to dual-stack IPv6/IPv4 is progressing well, thus enabling the use of IPv6-only CPU resources as agreed by the WLCG Management Board and presented by us at earlier CHEP conferences. WLCG relies on the network as a critical part of its infrastructure and therefore needs to guarantee effective network usage and prompt detection and resolution of any network issues including connection failures, congestion and traffic routing. The OSG Networking Area, in partnership with WLCG, is focused on being the primary source of networking information for its partners and constituents. [...]

Network Capabilities for the HL-LHC Era
/ Babik, Marian (CERN) ; McKee, Shawn (Michigan U.)
High Energy Physics (HEP) experiments rely on the networks as one of the critical parts of their infrastructure both within the participating laboratories and sites as well as globally to interconnect the sites, data centers and experiments instrumentation. Network virtualisation and programmable networks are two key enablers that facilitate agile, fast and more economical network infrastructures as well as service development, deployment and provisioning.Adoption of these technologies by HEP sites and experiments will allow them to design more scalable and robust networks while decreasing the overall cost and improving the effectiveness of the resource utilization. The primary challenge we currently face is ensuring that WLCG and its constituent collaborations will have the networking capabilities required to most effectively exploit LHC data for the lifetime of the LHC.
