Chapter 29: The Role of Noise on Beam Stability and Performance in HL-LHC
/ Buffat, X (CERN) ; Furuseth, S V (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne ; IPT, Lausanne) ; Métral, E (CERN) ; Pieloni, T (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne ; IPT, Lausanne) ; Tambasco, C (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne ; IPT, Lausanne) ; Valuch, D (CERN)
The beam response to an external excitation may result in a growth of the emittance, or more generally a modification of its particle distribution. The former reduces the luminosity, and the latter might lead to a loss of Landau damping of coherent instabilities. [...]

Impact of beam–beam effects on absolute luminosity calibrations at the CERN Large Hadron Collider
/ Babaev, A. (Tomsk Polytechnic U.) ; Barklow, T. (SLAC) ; Karacheban, O. (Rutgers U., Newark ; CERN) ; Kozanecki, W. (IRFU, Saclay) ; Kralik, I. (Kosice, IEF) ; Mehta, A. (Eotvos U.) ; Pasztor, G. At the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), absolute luminosity calibrations obtained by the van der Meer (vdM) method are affected by the mutual electromagnetic interaction of the two beams. The colliding bunches experience relative orbit shifts, as well as optical distortions akin to the dynamic-$\beta$ effect, that both depend on the transverse beam separation and must therefore be corrected for when deriving the absolute luminosity scale. Our Understanding of Transverse Instabilities and Mitigation Tools/Strategy
/ Buffat, X (CERN) ; Arduini, G (CERN) ; Amorim, D (CERN) ; Antipov, S (CERN) ; Barraud, L (CERN) ; Biancacci, N (CERN) ; Carver, L (CERN) ; Giordano, F (CERN) ; Iadarola, G (CERN) ; Li, K (CERN) et al.
The observations of coherent instabilities are compared to the expectations
based on the beam instability model. Their impact in the different phases of the
LHC operation and the corresponding mitigation strategies are discussed, with an
emphasis on the newly developed diagnostics.

Beam transfer function and stability diagram in the Large Hadron Collider
/ Tambasco, C (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Pieloni, T (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Buffat, X (CERN) ; Métral, E (CERN)
Predictions of transverse instability thresholds in the LHC are based on the computation of Landau damping by calculating the stability diagram (SD). However any modification of the tune spread and/or particle distribution modifies the expected Landau damping in the beams. [...]

Transverse Instabilities
/ Buffat, X (CERN) ; Amorim, D (CERN) ; Antipov, S (CERN) ; Arduini, G (CERN) ; Biancacci, N (CERN) ; Carver, L (CERN) ; Furuseth, S V (CERN) ; Iadarola, G (CERN) ; Li, K (CERN) ; Mether, L (CERN) et al.
The observations of coherent instabilities in all operational phases of the LHC
during Run 2 are summarised, describing their impact on the performance. The
evolution of the mitigation strategies and of the beam instability models since
the start up of the LHC are described and serve as a basis for the development
of a strategy for Run 3. [...]

Beam transfer function measurements used to probe the transverse Landau damping at the LHC

The Landau damping mechanism stabilizes the impedance driven head-tail modes in hadron synchrotrons. Because of the frequent coherent beam instabilities observed in the Large Hadron Collider in 2012, the Landau damping of the beams was doubted. [...]
