Simulated impact of the HL-LHC beam on a graphite target / Hjelle, Ingrid (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN ; Rome U.) ; Piccini, Audrey (CERN) ; Wiesner, Christoph (CERN) ; Wollmann, Daniel (CERN) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) ; Heron, John (CERN) ; Pasquali, Michele (CERN)
In the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) era, the intensity of the circulating bunches will increase to 2.2e+11 protons per bunch, almost twice the nominal LHC value. Besides detailed studies of known and new failure cases for HL-LHC, it is also required to investigate failures beyond nominal design. [...]

Wave-particle interactions in copper diamond / Portelli, Marcus (Malta U.) ; Pasquali, Michele (Rome U.) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) ; Bertarelli, Alessandro (CERN) ; Mollicone, Pierluigi (Malta U.) ; Sammut, Nicholas (Malta U.)
In the context of wave propagation in solids caused by particle-matter interactions, the composite structure of copper diamond is believed to have a significant impact on the material’s response. This limits the accuracy of isotropic homogeneous elastic and elastic-plastic models used in earlier studies modeling the material’s behavior under such conditions. [...]

A closed loop system to control transverse deformations in LHC collimators / Furness, Thomas (Huddersfield U.) ; Fletcher, Simon (Huddersfield U.) ; Williamson, James (Huddersfield U.) ; Martin, Haydn (Huddersfield U.) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) ; Bertarelli, Alessandro (CERN) ; Pasquali, Michele (Rome U.)
This work presents a novel closed-loop control system for the detection and control of thermal deformations integrated in the secondary collimators of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Interactions between spurious particles lost transversally from the circulating beam core and the collimator jaws that make up the active area of the collimator will result in thermally induced deformations in those jaws. [...]

Thermomechanical Characterisation of Copper Diamond and Benchmarking with the MultiMat Experiment / Portelli, Marcus (Malta U. ; CERN) ; Pasquali, Michele (Rome U.) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) ; Bertarelli, Alessandro (CERN) ; Mollicone, Pierluigi (Malta U.) ; Sammut, Nicholas (Malta U.) ; de Frutos, Óscar Sacristán (CERN) ; Valenzuela, Jorge Guardia (CERN) ; Neubauer, Erich (Austrian Inst. Tech., Seibersdorf) ; Kitzmantel, Michael (Austrian Inst. Tech., Seibersdorf) et al.
The High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider upgrade at CERN will result in an increase in the energy stored in the circulating particle beams, making it necessary to assess the thermomechanical performance of currently used and newly developed materials for use in beam intercepting devices such as collimators and absorbers. This study describes the thermomechanical characterisation of a novel copper diamond grade selected for use in tertiary collimators of the HL-LHC. [...]

Adaptive Collimator Design for Future Particle Accelerators / Furness, Thomas (Huddersfield U.) ; Bertarelli, Alessandro (CERN) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) ; Fletcher, Simon (Huddersfield U.) ; Gentini, Luca (CERN) ; Pasquali, Michele (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Williamson, James (Huddersfield U.)
The function of collimators in the LHC is to control and safely dispose of the halo particles that are produced by unavoidable beam losses from the circulating beam. Even tiny proportions of the 7TeV beam have the stored energy to quench the superconducting magnets or damage parts of the accelerator if left unchecked. [...]

Collimation system studies for the FCC-hh / Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Abramov, Andrey (JAI, UK ; CERN) ; Bertarelli, Alessandro (CERN) ; Besana, Maria Ilaria (CERN) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) ; Cerutti, Francesco (CERN) ; Faus-Golfe, Angeles (Orsay, LAL) ; Fiascaris, Maria (CERN) ; Gobbi, Giorgia (CERN) ; Krainer, Alexander (CERN) et al.
The Future Circular Collider (FCC-hh) is being designed as a 100 km ring that should collide 50 TeV proton beams. At 8.3 GJ, its stored beam energy will be a factor 28 higher than what has been achieved in the Large Hadron Collider, which has the highest stored beam energy among the colliders built so far. [...]

Mechanical robustness of HL-LHC collimator designs / Carra, Federico (CERN) ; Bertarelli, Alessandro (CERN) ; Gobbi, Giorgia (CERN) ; Guardia-Valenzuela, Jorge (CERN ; U. Two new absorbing materials were developed as collimator inserts to fulfil the requirements of HL-LHC higher brightness beams: molybdenum-carbide graphite (MoGr) and copper-diamond (CuCD). These materials were tested under intense beam impacts at CERN HiRadMat facility in 2015, when full jaw prototypes were irradiated. [...]

Numerical and experimental benchmarking of the dynamic response of SiC and TZM specimens in the MultiMat experiment / Portelli, Marcus (U. Malta ; CERN) ; Bertarelli, Alessandro (CERN) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) ; Pasquali, Michele (CERN) ; Sammut, Nicholas (U. Malta) ; Mollicone, Pierluigi (U. Malta)
The MultiMat experiment was successfully conducted at CERN's HiRadMat facility, aiming to test novel high-performance materials for use in beam intercepting devices, allowing the derivation and validation of material constitutive models. This article provides an analysis of results for two materials tested in the experiment, namely Silicon Carbide and Titanium Zirconium Molybdenum, with the aim of benchmarking the material constitutive models currently available in literature with experimental results. Dynamic Testing and Characterization of Advanced Materials in a New Experiment at CERN HiRadMat Facility / Bertarelli, Alessandro (CERN) ; Accettura, Carlotta (CERN ; Milan Polytechnic) ; Berthomé, Emmanuel (CERN) ; Bianchi, Laura (CERN) ; Bolz, Philipp (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) ; Fichera, Claudio (CERN) ; Frankl, Matthias (CERN) ; Furness, Thomas (Huddersfield U.) ; Gobbi, Giorgia (CERN) et al.
An innovative and comprehensive experiment (named “Multimat”) was successfully carried out at CERN HiRadMat facility on 18 different materials relevant for Collimators and Beam Intercepting Devices. Material samples, tested under high intensity proton pulses of 440 GeV/c, exceeding the energy density expected in HL-LHC, ranged from very light carbon foams to tungsten heavy alloys, including novel composites as graphite/carbides and metal/diamond without and with thin-film coatings.
