Effect of the fabrication route on the phase and volume changes during the reaction heat treatment of Nb3Sn superconducting wires / Scheuerlein, C (CERN) ; Andrieux, J (Lyon U.) ; Michels, M (CERN) ; Lackner, F (CERN) ; Meyer, C (BAM, Berlin) ; Chiriac, R (Lyon U.) ; Toche, F (Lyon U.) ; Hagner, M (Konstanz U.) ; Di Michiel, M (ESRF, Grenoble)
Accelerator magnets that can reach magnetic fields well beyond the Nb-Ti performance limits are presently being built and developed, using Nb$_3$Sn superconductors. This technology requires reaction heat treatment (RHT) of the magnet coils, during which Nb$_3$Sn is formed from its ductile precursor materials (a “wind and react” approach). [...]

Mechanical Properties and Strain-Induced Filament Degradation of Ex Situ and In Situ $MgB_{2}Wires$ / Alknes, P (CERN) ; Hagner, M (Konstanz U.) ; Bjoerstad, R (CERN) ; Scheuerlein, C (CERN) ; Bordini, B (CERN) ; Sugano, M (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Hudspeth, J (ESRF, Grenoble) ; Ballarino, A (CERN)
We have compared the mechanical properties and the degradation of the critical current after uniaxial tensile loading at room temperature (RT) and at 77 K of ex situ and in situ $MgB_2$ wires. The strain that the wires can withstand without degradation is at 77 K substantially higher than at RT. [...]

Three-Dimensional Analysis of the Porosity in MgB2Wires Using FIB Nanotomography / Hagner, M (Konstanz U.) ; Fritz, J M (Konstanz U.) ; Alknes, P (CERN) ; Scheuerlein, C (CERN) ; Zielke, L (Freiburg U.) ; Vierrath, S (Freiburg U.) ; Thiele, S (Freiburg U.) ; Bordini, B (CERN) ; Ballarino, A (CERN)
Porosity is one of several current limiting mechanisms in MgB2 wires. We have compared the microstructural homogeneity and the porosity distribution in different ex situ and in situ MgB2 powder-in-tube wires. [...]
