The Future Circular Collider proton-proton ring would require a high-field septum magnet with a blade as thin as possible for the extraction of the 50 TeV proton beam from the ring. One of the two baseline concepts in the conceptual design report is the “superconducting shield” (nicknamed as SuShi) septum, utilizing a zero field cooled, passive superconducting shield in order to create a zero-field channel for the circulating beam inside the bore of a 3 Tesla canted cosine theta (CCT) type superconducting magnet. An alternative “in situ” process to the MgB2 wire manufacturing is represented by the Reactive Mg-Liquid Infiltration (Mg-RLI) process [1], in which the precursor wire is constituted by a metallic sheath encasing a central Mg rod, surrounded by the B powders. We demonstrated that this peculiar “internal Mg” assembly is able to produce very dense superconducting material of high critical current density, with an acceptable fill factor, up to 0.28. [...]
