The South East European International Institute for Sustainable Technologies (SEEIIST) was proposed in 2016 at the World Academy of Art and Science, with the objective of building a facility for charged particle cancer therapy for the South Eastern European countries. SEEIIST will offer the world-class research needed to reduce or even revert the brain drain that is causing a shortage of talent and economic losses in South East Europe. [...]

LAA: a project using dedicated funding to develop technology for high-energy physics experiments / Taylor, Thomas (CERN) ; Wenninger, Horst (CERN) ; Zichichi, Antonino (CERN ; Erice, Majorana Ctr. ; World Lab, Lausanne)
In the mid-1980s, the cost of investment in infrastructure for particle accelerators and colliders at the highest energy had risen to such level that the host laboratory (CERN) could no longer afford the cost of development of new detector technology required for the experiments. Large particle colliders were identified by the tools of the future for high-energy physics research, and a long-term view of their development was already conjured up in the late 1970s. [...]

Introduction / Sutton, Christine (CERN) ; Wenninger, Horst (CERN)
The fruitful interaction between research in physics and technological development in the field of particle accelerators and detectors is the main theme of this book. For accelerators, research is driven by the need for ever-higher energy and intensity, and to supply an increasingly diverse range of beams, from electrons and protons and their antiparticles to heavy or radioactive nuclei. [...]

The LAA impact on technology R&D : from past to future / Wenninger, Horst (CERN)
LAA was the first special program at CERN dedicated to prepare the future beyond the ongoing CERN Large Electron-Positron Collider (LEP) construction program 1980 to 1989. Unlike all previous CERN projects (PS, BOOSTER, BEBC, ISR, SPS)LEP approval was obtained under the condition to stay within the CERN budget level [...]
