PERLE is a proposed high power Energy Recovery Linac, designed on multi-turn configuration, based on SRF technology, to be hosted at Orsay-France in a collaborative effort between local laboratories: LAL and IPNO, together with an international collaboration involving today: CERN, JLAB, STFC ASTeC Daresbury, Liverpool University and BINP Novosibirsk. PERLE will be a unique leading edge facility designed to push advances in accelerator technology, to provide intense and highly flexible test beams for component development. [...]

Architectural Considerations for Recirculated and Energy-Recovered Hard XFEL Drivers / Douglas, David (Jefferson Lab) ; Angal-Kalinin, Deepa (Daresbury ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. A confluence of events motivates discussion of design options for hard XFEL driver accelerators. Firstly, multiple superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) driven systems are now online (European XFEL), in construction (LCLS-II), or in design (MARIE); these provide increasing evidence of the transformational potential they offer for fundamental science with its concomitant benefits. PERLE (Powerful ERL for Experiments) is a novel ERL test facility, initially proposed to validate choices for a 60 GeV ERL foreseen in the design of the LHeC and the FCC-eh. Its main thrust is to probe high current, CW, multi-pass operation with superconducting cavities at 802 MHz (and perhaps testing other frequencies of interest). [...]

Suppression of Multipass, Multibunch Beam Breakup in Two Pass Recirculating Accelerators / Tennant, Chris ; Douglas, David ; Jordan, Kevin ; Merminga, Lia ; Pozdeyev, Eduard
Beam Breakup (BBU) occurs in all accelerators at sufficiently high currents. In recirculating accelerators, such as the energy recovery linacs used for high power FELs, the maximum current has historically been limited by multipass, multibunch BBU, a form that occurs when the electron beam interacts with the high order modes (HOMs) of an accelerating cavity on one pass and then again on the second pass. Experimental Investigation of Beam Breakup in the Jefferson Laboratory 10 kW FEL Upgrade Driver / Tennant, Chris ; Bazarov, Ivan V ; Douglas, David ; Hoffstaetter, Georg Heinz ; Jordan, Kevin ; Merminga, Lia ; Pozdeyev, Eduard ; Simrock, Stefan ; Smith, Todd I ; Wang, Haipeng
In recirculating accelerators, and in particular energy recovery linacs (ERLs), the maximum current has been limited by multipass, multibunch beam breakup (BBU), which occurs when the electron beam interacts with the higher-order modes (HOMs) of an accelerating cavity on the accelerating pass and again on the energy recovered pass. This effect is of particular concern in the design of modern high average current energy recovery accelerators utilizing superconducting technology. [...]
