We evaluate the temperature effect on the X-ray radiation-induced luminescence (RIL) of differently doped silica fibers obtained via the sol-gel route. Previous investigations showed that these optical materials exhibit interesting dosimetry properties, such as very good detection capabilities and linear response over a large range of dose rate. LUMINA, a fiber-based dosimeter, exploiting the radiation induced attenuation (RIA) phenomenon, has been operational inside the International Space Station (ISS) since August 2021. We discuss in this article its capability to detect the possible signatures of recent solar particle events (SPEs) through the related increase of the dose rate (DR) radiation level within the ISS. Radiation levels in the LHC tunnel and impact on electronics during the 2023 Pb ion run / Canesse, Auriane (CERN) ; Ricci, Daniel (CERN) ; Söderström, Daniel (CERN) ; Di Francesca, Diego (CERN) ; Tagkoudi, Eirini (CERN) ; Cerutti, Francesco (CERN) ; Lerner, Giuseppe (CERN) ; Garcia Alia, Ruben (CERN) ; Fiore, Salvatore (CERN) ; Niang, Samuel (CERN)
The 2023 operation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN included a one-month-long run with fully stripped Pb ion beams, marking the first heavy-ion run since 2018, and delivering Pb ion collisions at an unprecedented center-of-mass energy of 5.36 TeV per nucleon pair. During this period, the radiation fields in the LHC tunnel have been measured by means of different radiation monitors, including Beam Loss Monitors (BLMs), RadMons, and distributed optical fiber dosimeters, with the primary goal of quantifying the radiation exposure of electronic systems. In this work, we present the radiation environment of the large hadron collider (LHC), focusing on the year 2022, the first after the Long Shutdown 2 (LS2) (2019–2021). We highlight the most prominent radiation-level changes with respect to the 2018 operation, commenting on the related Radiation Hardness Assurance implications. [...]

Near-infrared radiation induced attenuation in nested anti-resonant nodeless fibers / Medaer, Sacha E R (CERN ; Erlangen - Nuremberg U., Theorie III) ; Bradley, Thomas D (Eindhoven, Tech. This Letter reports the first, to the best of our knowledge, spectral radiation induced attenuation (RIA) measurements of nested anti-resonant nodeless hollow-core fibers (NANFs). A 5-tube NANF, alongside a solid-core single-mode radiation resistant fiber (SM-RRF), was irradiated under γ-ray up to 101 kGy (SiO2) and under x-ray up to 241 kGy (SiO2). [...]

CERN Super Proton Synchrotron Radiation Environment and Related Radiation Hardness Assurance Implications / Biłko, Kacper (CERN ; Lab. The super proton synchrotron (SPS) is the second largest accelerator at CERN where protons are accelerated between 16 and 450 GeV/c. Beam losses, leading to the mixed-field radiation of up to MGy magnitude, pose a threat to the reliability of the electronic equipment and polymer materials located in the tunnel and its vicinity.
