Design, construction, and beam tests of a rotatable collimator prototype for high-intensity and high-energy hadron accelerators / Markiewicz, T (SLAC) ; Bong, E (SLAC) ; Keller, L (SLAC) ; Smith, J (SLAC) ; Aberle, O (CERN) ; Accettura, C (CERN) ; Bertarelli, A (CERN) ; Berthome, E (CERN) ; Biancacci, N (CERN) ; Butcher, M (CERN) et al.
A rotatable-jaw collimator design was conceived as a solution to recover from catastrophic beam impacts which would damage a collimator at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) or its High-Luminosity upgrade (HL-LHC). One such rotatable collimator prototype was designed and built at SLAC and delivered to CERN for tests with LHC-type circulating beams in the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). [...]

Muon Accumulator Ring Requirements for a Low Emittance Muon Collider from Positrons on Target / Boscolo, Manuela (Frascati) ; Antonelli, Mario (Frascati) ; Blanco-García, Oscar (Frascati) ; Collamati, Francesco (INFN, Rome) ; Guiducci, Susanna (Frascati) ; Keller, Lewis (SLAC) ; Liuzzo, Simone (ESRF, Grenoble) ; Raimondi, Pantaleo (ESRF, Grenoble) ; Schulte, Daniel (CERN)
Very low emittance muon beams can be produced by direct annihilation of about 45~GeV positrons on atomic electrons in a thin target. With such a muon beam source, a mu+mu- collider can be designed in the multi-TeV range at very high luminosities. [...]

A new scheme to produce muon beams characterised by very low emittance, in such a way to avoid the need for cooling, using a positron beam of about 45 GeV interacting on electrons on target is being studied by our group. This scheme is challenging and innovative, and needs a full design study to be developed. [...]

A second generation prototype rotatable collimator has been fabricated at SLAC and delivered to CERN for further vacuum, metrology, function and impedance tests. The design features two cylindrical Glidcop jaws designed to each absorb 12 kW of beam in steady state and up to 60 kW in transitory beam loss with no damage and minimal thermal distortion [1]. [...]

The Phase II upgrade to the LHC collimation system calls for complementing the 30 high robust Phase I graphite collimators with 30 high Z Phase II collimators. One option is to use metallic rotatable collimators and this design will be discussed here. [...]

WP: 8: Collimators & materials for higher beam power beam
Task: 8.1: ColMat Coordination & Communication

A current issue with the LHC collimation system is single-diffractive, off-energy protons from the primary collimators that pass completely through the secondary collimation system and are absorbed immediately downbeam in the cold magnets of the dispersion suppressor section. [...]
