Mechanical analysis of the collaring process of the 11 T dipole magnet / Ferracin, Paolo (CERN) ; Bottura, Luca (CERN) ; Bourcey, Nicolas (CERN) ; Daly, Michael (CERN) ; Devred, Arnaud (CERN) ; Izquierdo Bermudez, Susana (CERN) ; Ferradas Troitino, Jose (CERN) ; Ferradas Troitino, Salvador (CERN) ; Grosclaude, Philippe (CERN) ; Guinchard, Michael (CERN) et al.
As part of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) accelerator upgrades foreseen by the high luminosity-LHC project, the CERN 11 T program is aimed at replacing standard LHC Nb-Ti main dipole magnets, operating with a bore field of 8.3 T, with pairs of shorter Nb$_3$Sn dipole magnets with a bore field of 11 T and the same total integrated field, thus providing space for additional collimators in the dispersion suppressor region. At the time of the submission of this paper, six single-aperture and two double-aperture short models have been fabricated and tested. [...]

Quench propagation in Nb$_{3}$Sn cos-theta 11 T dipole model magnets in high stress areas / Mangiarotti, Franco J (CERN) ; Willering, Gerard P (CERN) ; Bajas, Hugues (CERN) ; Bajko, Marta ; Bordini, Bernardo (CERN) ; Bottura, Luca (CERN) ; Izquierdo Bermudez, Susana (CERN) ; Löffler, Christian H (CERN) ; Gomez, Jose V Lorenzo ; Savary, Frederic (CERN) et al.
A large number of training quenches at various currents, temperatures, and ramp rates, have been performed on six 11 T dipole model magnets. Quenches in the midplane of these magnets were of special interest, since the quench current in the last three models measured in 2016 was limited to between 84% and 92% of the magnets short sample limit. Finite Element Analysis of the Mechanical Conditions of the Nb$_3$Sn Cable of the 11 T Dipole Magnet During Operation / Löffler, Christian (CERN) ; Daly, Michael (CERN) ; Nilsson, Emelie (CERN) ; Savary, Frederic (CERN)
The development of the 11 T Dipole for the Dispersion Suppressor Collimators (DS11T) for the HiLumi LHC Project at CERN is nearly completed for the RRP conductor route. The DS11T magnet has a cosine theta 60-mm bore design with a removable pole, 56 turns, five wedges, and six coil blocks per quadrant. [...]

Comparison of Cold Powering Performance of 2-m-Long Nb$_{3}$Sn 11 T Model Magnets / Willering, Gerard (CERN) ; Bajko, Marta (CERN) ; Bajas, Hugues (CERN) ; Bordini, Bernardo (CERN) ; Bottura, Luca (CERN) ; Feuvrier, Jerome (CERN) ; Fiscarelli, Lucio (CERN) ; Izquierdo Bermudez, Susana (CERN) ; Loffler, Christian (CERN) ; Mangiarotti, Franco (CERN) et al.
For the upgrade of the LHC, two 15-m NbTi main dipole magnets are foreseen to be replaced by two 11 T 5.7-m-long Nb$_{3}$Sn dipoles each. A series of model magnets has been produced to verify the design choices that are important for the prototype and series production, focusing on mechanical aspects and protection studies. [...]

Multiscale approach to the mechanical behavior of epoxy impregnated Nb$_{3}$Sn coils for the 11 T dipole / Daly, Michael (CERN) ; Loffler, Christian H (CERN) ; Smekens, David (CERN) ; Fontenla, A T (CERN) ; Sacristan De Frutos, Oscar (CERN) ; Guinchard, Michael (CERN) ; Savary, Frederic (CERN)
The superconducting 11 T dipole magnets developed at CERN for the HL-LHC project are equipped with coils manufactured from Nb$_{3}$Sn Rutherford cables and following the wind and react fabrication technique. The brittleness of the multifilamentary structure of the Nb$_{3}$Sn within the cable strands exposes the coils to permanent performance degradation when subjected to excessive strain during assembly and operation. Design Optimization of the $Nb_3Sn$ 11 T Dipole for the High Luminosity LHC / Nilsson, Emelie (CERN) ; Izquierdo Bermudez, Susana (CERN) ; Ballarino, Amalia (CERN) ; Bordini, Bernardo (CERN) ; Bottura, Luca (CERN) ; Fleiter, Jerome (CERN) ; Lackner, Friedrich (CERN) ; Loffler, Christian (CERN) ; Perez, Juan Carlos (CERN) ; Prin, Herve (CERN) et al.
Abstract: As a part of the large hadron collider luminosity upgrade (HiLumi-LHC) program, CERN is planning to replace some of the 8.33-T 15-m-long Nb-Ti LHC main dipoles with shorter 11 T Nb$_{3}$Sn magnets providing longitudinal space for additional collimators. Whereas the present design of the 11 T dipole enables the use of RRP conductor with critical current degradation after cabling at the level of 5%, new cross sections of the cable have been studied in order to further decrease the degradation of both critical current and resistivity of the copper matrix. Progress on the Development of the $Nb_3Sn$ 11T Dipole for the High Luminosity Upgrade of LHC / Savary, Frederic (CERN) ; Bajko, Marta (CERN) ; Bordini, Bernardo (CERN) ; Bottura, Luca (CERN) ; Fiscarelli, Lucio (CERN) ; Fleiter, Jerome (CERN) ; Foussat, Arnaud (CERN) ; Izquierdo Bermudez, Susana (CERN) ; Karppinen, Mikko (CERN) ; Lackner, Friedrich (CERN) et al.
The high-luminosity large hadron collider (LHC) project at CERN entered into the production phase in October 2015 after the completion of the design study phase. In the meantime, the development of the 11 T dipole needed for the upgrade of the collimation system of the machine made significant progress with very good performance of the first two-in-one magnet model of 2-m length made at CERN.
