Investigation of CLYC-6 for thermal neutron detection and CLYC-7 for fast neutron spectrometry / Ferrulli, Francesca (Caen U. ; CERN) ; Labalme, Marc (Caen U.) ; Silari, Marco (CERN)
Highly enriched  6Li and  7Li Cs2LiYCl 6 (CLYC) scintillators were investigated in view of their application as thermal neutron counter (CLYC-6) and as fast neutron spectrometer (CLYC-7) in the recently developed B-RAD radiation survey metre, an instrument designed to work in regions of high magnetic fields, currently equipped with a probe for photon dose rate measurements and γ-spectrometry. Both crystals were irradiated with a 2.5 MeV mono-energetic neutron beam from a Deuterium–Deuterium (D–D) generator and characterised in terms of neutron/γ-ray (n/γ) discrimination capability by the Pulse Shape Discrimination (PSD) method, energy resolution and quenching factor. Characterization of stilbene and EJ-276 scintillators coupled with a large area SiPM array for a fast neutron dose rate detector / Ferrulli, F. (Caen U. ; CERN) ; Dinar, N. (CERN) ; Gallego Manzano, L. (CERN) ; Labalme, M. (Caen U.) ; Silari, M. (CERN)
A 1-inch stilbene and EJ-276 (plastic) organic scintillators were characterized in view of their use in a portable survey meter for fast neutron detection and dose rate measurements in radiation protection. They were coupled with a large area Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM) array and characterized in terms of neutron/$\gamma$–ray (n/$\gamma$) discrimination capability, count rate linearity, count rate saturation effects, temperature stability and neutron detection efficiency. The FIRST (Fragmentation of Ions Relevant for Space and Therapy) experiment at GSI has been designed to study carbon fragmentation, measuring (12)C double differential cross sections (- (2)I /- - E) for different beam energies between 100 and 1000 MeV/u. The experimental setup integrates newly designed detectors in the, so called, Interaction Region around the graphite target. [...]

Hadrontherapy treatments require a very high precision on the dose deposition ( 2.5% and 1-2mm) in order to keep the benefits of the precise ions’ ballistic. The largest uncertainty on the physical dose deposition is due to ion fragmentation. [...]
