Measurement of $^{12}$C Fragmentation Cross Sections on C, O, and H in the Energy Range of Interest for Particle Therapy Applications / Mattei, I ; Alexandrov, A ; Alunni Solestizi, L ; Ambrosi, G ; Argiro, S ; Bartosik, N ; Battistoni, G ; Belcari, N ; Biondi, S ; Bisogni, M G et al.
In a carbon ion treatment the nuclear fragmentation of both target and beam projectiles impacts on the dose released on the tumor and on the surrounding healthy tissues. Carbon ion fragmentation occurring inside the patient body has to be studied in order to take into account this contribution. [...]

In hadron therapy, the accelerated ions, interacting with the body of the patient, cause the fragmentation of both projectile and target nuclei. The fragments interact with the human tissues depositing energy both in the entrance channel and in the volume surrounding the tumor. [...]

Monitoring Proton Therapy Through in-Beam PET: An Experimental Phantom Study / Topi, A (INFN, Pisa) ; Muraro, S (INFN, Pisa) ; Battistoni, G (INFN, Milan) ; Belcari, N (INFN, Pisa ; Pisa U.) ; Bisogni, M G (INFN, Pisa ; Pisa U.) ; Camarlinghi, N (INFN, Pisa ; Pisa U.) ; Del Guerra, A (INFN, Pisa ; Pisa U.) ; Ferrari, A (CERN) ; Kopec, R (Cracow, INP) ; Kraan, A C (INFN, Pisa) et al.
In this paper, we investigate the use of a positron emission tomography (PET) system to monitor the proton therapy. The monitoring procedure is based on the comparison between the β+ activity generated in the irradiated volume during the treatment, with the β+ activity distribution obtained with Monte Carlo (MC) simulation. Low statistics positron activity reconstruction methods for proton therapy / Muraro, S (Pisa U. ; INFN, Pisa) ; Camarlinghi, N (Pisa U. ; INFN, Pisa) ; Battistoni, G (INFN, Milan) ; Belcari, N (Pisa U. ; INFN, Pisa) ; Bisogni, M G (INFN, Pisa ; Pisa U.) ; Cristoforetti, L (Unlisted, IT) ; Del Guerra, A (Pisa U. ; INFN, Pisa) ; Ferrari, A (CERN) ; Fracchiolla, F (Unlisted, IT) ; Kraan, A (Pisa U. ; INFN, Pisa) et al.
Positron emission tomography (PET) is one of the most mature techniques for monitoring in ion beam therapy. PET allows to reconstruct the β$^{+}$ activity generated in the patient by the nuclear interaction of the ions. [...]

In proton-therapy clinical practice a constant RBE equal to 1.1 is adopted, regardless of the demonstrated RBE variations, which depends on physical and biological parameters. Among other mechanisms, nuclear interactions might influence the proton-RBE due to secondary heavier particles produced by target fragmentation that can significantly contribute to the total dose: an un-wanted and undetermined increase of normal tissues complications probability may occur. The quality assurance of particle therapy treatment is a fundamental issue that can be addressed by developing reliable monitoring techniques and indicators of the treatment plan correctness. Among the available imaging techniques, positron emission tomography (PET) has long been investigated and then clinically applied to proton and carbon beams. [...]

In this study a procedure for range verification in proton therapy by means of a planar in-beam PET system is presented. The procedure consists of two steps: the measurement of the β+-activity induced in the irradiated body by the proton beam and the comparison of these distributions with simulations. [...]
