Experimental Status Of $J/\psi$ Suppression

The most recent results obtained by experiment NA50 show that the $J /\psi$ cross-section per nucleon-nucleon collision in semi-peripheral Pb-Pb reactions is "normally" suppressed in the sense that it follows the trend already observed from p-p and up to the most central S-U reactions. A clear change of behaviour is observed for more central Pb-Pb collisions which could be due to the transition of normal nuclear matter to its predicted Quark-Gluon Plasma state

Transverse momentum dependence of charmonium suppression in Pb-Pb collisions at the CERN SPS

Charmonium suppression in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 GeV/c per nucleon is investigated in detail with the study of the transverse momentum distributions of J/ psi as a function of the centrality of the collision. It is shown that the observed J/ psi suppression in Pb-Pb interactions is particularly significant mainly at low transverse momentum where it strongly depends on centrality. [...]

Charmonia suppression in nucleus-nucleus interactions at CERN SPS

The NA50 experiment at CERN SPS has studied charmonium production in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 GeV/c per nucleon. According to the theoretical predictions the observation of the suppression of the $J/\psi$ production yield is expected to be an unambiguous probe for a phase transition from ordinary nuclear matter towards a state in which quarks and gluons are deconfined. Formation of Centauro in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC and their detection with the CASTOR detector of CMS

We present a phenomenological model describing the formation of a deconfined quark matter fireball in the very forward, baryon-rich rapidity region in nucleus-nucleus interactions, and its subsequent decay into baryons and possibly strangelets. The model explains the centauro events observed in cosmic ray data and the long-penetrating component frequently accompanying them, and makes predictions for the LHC. [...]
