Deformation Behavior and Degradation on Rutherford Cabling of Nb$_{\text{3}}$Sn Wires
/ Hopkins, Simon C (CERN) ; Medina-Clavijo, Bentejui (CERN) ; Rastoll, Cristin (CERN ; U. Bourgogne) ; Rodia, Davide (CERN ; Geneva U.) ; Malabaila, Marina (CERN) ; Barth, Christian (CERN) ; Fleiter, Jerome (CERN) ; Boutboul, Thierry (CERN) ; Ballarino, Amalia (CERN)
In the production of Rutherford cables, Nb 3 Sn strands are subjected to severe deformation; and to evaluate this degradation prior to cabling, uniaxial rolling with a thickness reduction of ∼15% has often been used. The effects of this deformation on superconducting performance differ significantly between wire designs. [...]

Weak acid leaching of MgB$_2$ to purify magnesiothermic boron powder
/ Capra, Marco (Genoa U.) ; Bovone, Gianmarco (CNR, Italy) ; Loria, Federico (CNR, Italy) ; Bernini, Cristina (CNR, Italy) ; Hopkins, Simon C (CERN) ; Ballarino, Amalia (CERN) ; Tropeano, Matteo (ASG Supercond., Genova) ; Tumino, Andrea (ASG Supercond., Genova) ; Grasso, Gianni (ASG Supercond., Genova) ; Ferdeghini, Carlo (CNR, Italy) et al.
We have established a new procedure for recovering boron contained in oxidized MgB$_2$ phase. Incorrect conditions of synthesis or conservation, or excess impurities in precursors, can lead to MgO formation with consequent degradation of superconducting properties, thus representing a possible problem in the industrial production of MgB$_2$ conductors following the ex-situ PIT process. Progress on the Upgrade of EDIPO, a 15 T Large Aperture Dipole
/ Araujo, Douglas Martins (CERN) ; Ballarino, Amalia (CERN) ; Bordini, Bernardo (CERN) ; Bottura, Luca (CERN) ; Hopkins, Simon C (CERN) ; Perez, Juan C (CERN) ; Ravaioli, Emmanuele (CERN) ; de Rijk, Gijs (CERN) ; Bruzzone, Pierluigi (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Sarasola, Xabier (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) et al.
The upgraded magnet assembly of the EDIPO test facility aims at generating 15 T at 4.2 K and 85% of short sample limit in a large rectangular aperture and over a uniform field length of 1000 mm. During 2020 the design studies have concentrated on two flared-end block-coil design options with four double-pancake coils, two per pole. [...]

Evidence for Longitudinal Homogeneity and No J$_e$ Degradation in Bi-2212 Wires Realized by the GDG Process
/ Leoncino, Luca (CNR-SPIN, Naples) ; Celentano, Giuseppe (ENEA, Rome) ; Chiarelli, Sandro (ENEA, Rome) ; Leveratto, Alessandro (CNR-SPIN, Naples) ; Putti, Marina (U. Genoa) ; Ferdeghini, Carlo (CNR-SPIN, Naples) ; Ballarino, Amalia (CERN) ; Hopkins, Simon C (CERN) ; Malagoli, Andrea (CNR-SPIN, Naples)
The GDG fabrication process developed at CNR-SPIN is a promising method for producing Bi-2212 wires without overpressure processing. In this paper, critical current measurements performed at ENEA on both short and long samples in magnetic fields up to 14 T are compared. [...]

Quantitative Analysis and Optimization of Nb$_3$Sn Wire Designs Toward Future Circular Collider Performance Targets
/ Hopkins, Simon C (CERN) ; Baskys, Algirdas (CERN) ; Valero, Adrià Canós (CERN) ; Ballarino, Amalia (CERN)
In the context of the Future Circular Collider (FCC) study, industrial and academic partners are developing novel Nb3Sn superconducting wires with a wide variety of layouts, production methods, and compositions, with the aim of achieving challenging performance targets including a non-copper critical current density of 1500 A mm-2at 16 T and 4.2 K. There is a clear need for a systematic and quantitative approach to analyze these conductors, identifying correlations between performance, microstructure, and wire design, in order to optimize designs and heat treatments, and to identify the most promising directions for future trials. Characterization of Freeze-Dried Boron Nanopowders and Parameter Optimization in Ex Situ MgB2 Wire Production
/ Capra, Marco (U. Genoa ; CNR-SPIN, Naples) ; Bovone, Gianmarco (CNR-SPIN, Naples) ; Loria, Federico (CNR-SPIN, Naples) ; Bernini, Cristina (CNR-SPIN, Naples) ; Tropeano, Matteo (ASG Supercond., Genova) ; Tumino, Andrea (ASG Supercond., Genova) ; Grasso, Gianni (ASG Supercond., Genova) ; Hopkins, Simon C (CERN) ; Ballarino, Amalia (CERN) ; Ferdeghini, Carlo (Genoa U.) et al.
This article reports a study to identify optimal synthesis parameters for a pure boron precursor prepared following a patented process developed at CNR-SPIN laboratories, performed in the framework of a collaboration between CNR-SPIN and CERN. Boron is a precursor that plays a crucial role in the MgB2wire manufacturing, as a consequence, the synthesis parameters of the superconducting phase have been investigated. [...]

Design, Performance and Cabling Analysis of Nb3Sn Wires for the FCC Study
/ Hopkins, Simon C (CERN) ; Baskys, Algirdas (CERN) ; Bordini, Bernardo (CERN) ; Fleiter, Jerome (CERN) ; Ballarino, Amalia (CERN)
The hadron collider proposed by the Future Circular Collider (FCC) study would require high-field superconducting magnets capable of producing a dipole field of around 16 T in a 50 mm aperture. To develop a suitable conductor for these magnets, CERN is coordinating a conductor development programme aiming to obtain Nb$_3$Sn wire with a non-copper critical current density of 1500 A mm$^{-2}$ at 16 T and 4.2 K, in lengths suitable for manufacturing 14 m long magnets, and able to withstand cabling without significant degradation. Analysis of Fe(Se,Te) Films Deposited On Unbuffered Invar 36
/ Sylva, Giulia (Genoa U.) ; Malagoli, Andrea (CNR-SPIN, Genova) ; Bellingeri, Emilio (CNR-SPIN, Genova) ; Putti, Marina (Genoa U.) ; Ferdeghini, Carlo (CNR-SPIN, Genova) ; Vannozzi, Angelo (ENEA, Frascati) ; Celentano, Giuseppe (ENEA, Frascati) ; Hopkins, Simon C (CERN) ; Lunt, Alexander (CERN) ; Ballarino, Amalia (CERN) et al.
In this paper, the feasibility of producing Fe(Se,Te)-coated conductors on cost-effective, unbuffered Invar 36 substrates is studied. A suitable substrate with a sharp {001}<100> texture and a misorientation angle lower than 10° was developed, and the possibility of growing epitaxial thin films without any buffer layer was demonstrated.
