Crystal collimation of heavy-ion beams
/ Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Mazzolari, Andrea (INFN, Pisa) ; Abramov, Andrey (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Lindstrom, Bjorn (CERN) ; Mirarchi, Daniele (CERN) ; Matheson, Eloise (CERN) ; Potoine, Jean-Baptiste (IES, Montpellier) ; Dewhurst, Kay (CERN) ; Bandiera, Laura (INFN, Pisa) et al.
An important upgrade programme is planned for the collimation system of Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for lead–ion beams that will already reach their high-luminosity target intensity upgrade in the LHC Run 3 (2022-2025). While certain effects like e-cloud, beam-beam, impedance, inject and dump protection are relaxed with ion beams, halo collimation becomes a challenge, as the conventional multi-stage collimation system is about two orders of magnitude less efficient than for proton beams. FCC-ee positron source from conventional to crystal-based
/ Alharthi, Fahad (KACST, Riyadh ; IJCLab, Orsay) ; Chaikovska, Iryna (IJCLab, Orsay) ; Chehab, Robert (IJCLab, Orsay) ; Mytrochenko, Viktor (IJCLab, Orsay) ; Wang, Yuting (IJCLab, Orsay) ; Zhao, Yongke (CERN) ; Bandiera, Laura (INFN, Ferrara) ; Canale, Nicola (INFN, Ferrara) ; Guidi, Vincenzo (INFN, Ferrara ; Ferrara U.) ; Malagutti, Lorenzo (INFN, Ferrara) et al.
The high-luminosity requirement in future lepton colliders imposes a need for a high-intensity positron source. In the conventional scheme, positron beams are obtained by the conversion of bremsstrahlung photons into electron-positron pairs through the interaction between a high-energy electron beam and a high-Z amorphous target. Characterization of bent crystals for beam collimation with 6.8 TeV proton beams at the LHC
/ D'Andrea, Marco (CERN) ; Aberle, Oliver (CERN) ; Abramov, Andrey (CERN) ; Bandiera, Laura (INFN, Ferrara) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Cai, Rongrong (CERN ; EPFL-ISIC, Lausanne) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Demassieux, Quentin (CERN) ; Dewhurst, Kay Alana (CERN) ; Di Castro, Mario (CERN) et al.
The concept of crystal collimation exploits the peculiar properties of crystalline materials to deflect high-energy beam particles at angles orders of magnitude larger than what can be achieved with scattering by conventional materials used as primary collimators. This innovative technique is planned to be used to improve the collimation efficiency with heavy-ion beams at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and its High-Luminosity upgrade (HL-LHC). [...]

Crystals with small thickness along the beam exhibit top performance for steering particle beams through planar channeling. For such crystals, the effect of nuclear dechanneling plays an important role because it affects their efficiency. [...]

Deflection due to axial channeling in a silicon crystal bent along the [111] axis was observed for 150 GeV/c negative particles, mainly π− mesons, at one of the secondary beams of the CERN SPS. The whole beam was deflected to one side with the efficiency of about 90% and with the peak position at the bend crystal angle α=43 μrad. [...]
