SIP4C/C++ at CERN - Status and lessons learned / Jensen, Steen (CERN) ; Bau, Jean-Claude (CERN) ; Dworak, Andrzej (CERN) ; Gourber-Pace, Marine (CERN) ; Hoguin, Frederic (CERN) ; Lauener, Joel (CERN) ; Locci, Frank (CERN) ; Sigerud, Katarina (CERN) ; Sliwinski, Wojciech (CERN)
After 4 years of promoting the Software Improvement Process for C/C++ (SIP4C/C++) initiative at CERN, we describe the current status for tools and procedures along with how they have been integrated into our environment. Based on feedback from four project teams, we present reasons for and against their adoption. [...]

Feedback on controls from 2015 operation / Gourber-Pace, Marine (CERN)
The talk will first look back at the Long Shutdown 1 (LS1) from hardware and software consolidation perspectives. The review of the operation of the controls system during 2015 (what worked well and not so well) will be presented as well as the preliminary conclusions of the LS1 controls review held with Operation and Equipment groups early December 2015. The AWAKE experiment at CERN will use a proton bunch with an momentum of 400 GeV/c from the SPS to drive large amplitude wakefields in a plasma. This will require a ~830 m long transfer line from the SPS to the experiment. [...]

The LHC Injectors Upgrade project (LIU) has been initiated to improve the performances of the existing injector complex at CERN to match the future requirements of the HL-LHC. In this framework, the Proton Synchrotron (PS) will undergo fundamental changes for many of its main systems: the injection energy will be increased to reduce space-charge effects, the transverse damper will be improved to cope with transverse instabilities the RF systems will be upgraded to accelerate higher beam intensity and brightness. The demanding beam performance requirements of the High Luminosity (HL-) LHC project translate into a set of requirements and upgrade paths for the LHC injector complex. In this paper the performance requirements for the SPS and the known limitations are reviewed in the light of the 2012 operational experience. [...]

The first phase of the heavy ion physics program at the LHC aims to provide lead-lead collisions at energies of 5.5 TeV per colliding nucleon pair and ion-ion luminosity of 1027 cm-2s-1. The transformation of CERN’s ion injector complex (Linac3-LEIR-PS-SPS) presents a number of beam physics and engineering challenges, which are described in this paper. [...]
