As part of the high-luminosity upgrade of CERN LHC accelerator project, the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) in Genoa, Italy, has developed the MBRD separation-recombination dipole, also known as D2, whose function is to bring beams into collision before and after the interaction regions of the CMS and ATLAS experiments. It is a NbTi cos-theta double aperture dipole that generates a 4.5 T field in a 105 mm aperture, with a magnetic length of 7.78 m, and has the specific feature that the magnetic field in the two apertures is oriented in the same direction. The future of the particle accelerators points to a new CERN’s circular collider with an order of magnitude increase in the center-of-mass energy compared to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). To achieve this increase from 14 TeV to 100 TeV a 100 km tunnel will be required to host the collider. [...]

The Future Circular Collider (FCC) is the main option for the next generation of the High Energy Physics research. The accelerator in hadron-hadron configuration (FCC-hh) requires magnets able to generate fields of the order of 16 T to circulate particles in a 100 km circumference collider and therefore to reach 100 TeV centre of mass energy. The recombination dipoles MBRD for the High Luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) at CERN are double-aperture superconducting magnets generating a central magnetic field of 4.5 T in a 105 mm diameter bore, directed in the same direction in both apertures. The integrated magnetic field is 35 T-m in a magnetic length of 7.78 m: with respect to the corresponding magnet presently installed in LHC, the aperture is larger, the length is smaller and the central field is higher. The next generation particle accelerators will need to increase by an order of magnitude the center-of-mass energy: a viable solution is a 100 TeV circular collider, temporarily called Future Circular Collider (FCC). To achieve this goal, a new generation of double aperture superconducting magnets, capable of generating a high quality, stable 16 T magnetic field in a 50 mm bore is being developed. [...]
