/ Calia, Andrea (CERN) ; Salvant, Benoit (CERN) ; Mirarchi, Daniele (CERN) ; Nisbet, David (CERN) ; Jacquet, Delphine (CERN) ; Métral, Elias (CERN) ; Bravin, Enrico (CERN) ; Trad, Georges (CERN) ; Wenninger, Jorg (CERN) ; Solfaroli, Matteo (CERN) et al.
In 2023 the LHC restarted after the yearly winter shutdown with a new machine configuration optimized for intensities of up to 1.8e+11 protons per bunch. In the first two months of the 2023 run the bunch intensities were pushed up to 1.6e+11 protons per bunch until a severe vacuum degradation, caused by a damaged RF bridge, occurred close to the ATLAS experiment. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) employs special optics and configurations, alongside low-beta* collision optics, to address specific experimental requirements. These include calibrating luminosity monitors (vdM) and facilitating forward physics measurements in TOTEM and ALFA experiments (high-beta). [...]

LHC Triplet Task Force Report
/ Arduini, Gianluigi (CERN) ; Bradu, Benjamin (CERN) ; Brodzinski, Krzysztof (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Cerutti, Francesco (CERN) ; Ciccotelli, Alessia (University of Manchester (GB)) ; Deferne, Guy (CERN) ; Fartoukh, Stephane (CERN) ; Fessia, Paolo (CERN) ; Garion, Cedric (CERN) et al.
The excellent performance of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the extension of Run 3 by one year have led to a significant increase of the expected integrated luminosity by the end of its operation and before the start of the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), exceeding the design LHC integrated luminosity of 300 fb−1 for which the final focus region has been designed. Machine Configuration for the 2023 Proton Run (MD7003)
/ Fartoukh, Stephane (CERN) ; Dilly, Joschua Werner (CERN) ; Hostettler, Michi (CERN) ; Iadarola, Giovanni (CERN) ; Jacquet, Delphine (CERN) ; Kostoglou, Sofia (CERN) ; Mirarchi, Daniele (CERN) ; Persson, Tobias Hakan Bjorn (CERN) ; Solfaroli Camillocci, Matteo (CERN) ; Sterbini, Guido (CERN) et al.
This note contains a condensed summary of the various beam tests which took place in 2022 in order to validate the machine configuration planned to be deployed for the 2023 proton run of the LHC, including in particular a combined ramp and anti-telescopic squeeze, the rotation of the external crossing angle in LHCb, and beam operation with up to 1.8 × 1011 p/b..

A Novel Method for Detecting Unidentified Falling Object Loss Patterns in the LHC
/ Coyle, Loic (CERN) ; Blanc, Frederic (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Di Croce, Davide (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Mirarchi, Daniele (CERN) ; Pieloni, Tatiana (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Solfaroli Camillocci, Matteo (CERN) ; Wenninger, Jorg (CERN)
Understanding and mitigating particle losses in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is essential for both machine safety and efficient operation. Abnormal loss distributions are telltale signs of abnormal beam behaviour or incorrect machine configuration. [...]

In this contribution we provide a summary of the LHC hardware commissioning campaign following the second CERN Long Shutdown (LS2), initially targeting the nominal LHC energy of 7 TeV. A summary of the test procedures and tools used for testing the LHC superconducting circuits is given, together with statistics on the successful test execution. [...]

First Experience of Crystal Collimators During LHC Special Runs and Plans for the Future

Padua (main)) ; Avati, Valentina (CERN ; AGH-UST, Cracow) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Butcher, Mark (CERN) ; Deile, Mario (CERN) ; Di Castro, Mario (CERN) ; Dziedzic, Bartosz (Cracow, INP) ; Garcia Morales, Hector (CERN ; Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Gavrikov, Yury (St. Petersburg, INP ; CERN) ; Hiller, Karlheinz (DESY, Zeuthen) et al.
Bent crystals can deflect charged particles by trapping them within the potential well generated by neighboring crystalline planes and forcing them to follow the curvature of the crystal itself. This property has been extensively studied over the past decade at the CERN accelerator complex, as well as in other laboratories, for a variety of applications, ranging from beam collimation to beam extraction and in-beam fixed target experiments. Report from LHC MD 3312: Replicating HL-LHC DA
/ Dilly, Joschua Werner (Humboldt University of Berlin (DE)) ; Albert, Markus (CERN) ; Carlier, Felix Simon (CERN) ; Coello De Portugal - Martinez Vazquez, Jaime Maria ; Dalena, Barbara (Université Paris-Saclay (FR)) ; Fol, Elena (CERN) ; Hofer, Michael (CERN) ; Maclean, Ewen Hamish (CERN) ; Malina, Lukas ; Persson, Tobias Hakan Bjorn (CERN) et al.
During MD3312 on the 30.10.2018 the non-linear conditions in the insertion regions of the planned HL-LHC were replicated to our best knowledge and within the capabilities of the hardware currently available in the LHC: A flat ATS-optics scheme of beta* = 15cm / 60cm in IP1 and IP5 was applied as well as sextupole, octupole and (normal) dodecapole errors were introduced into the machine via the corrector magnets in the interaction regions. Detection and Classification of Collective Beam Behaviour in the LHC
/ Coyle, Loic (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne ; CERN) ; Blanc, Frederic (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Buffat, Xavier (CERN) ; Krymova, Ekaterina (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne ; Zurich, ETH) ; Obozinski, Guillaume (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne ; Zurich, ETH) ; Pieloni, Tatiana (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne ; CERN) ; Schenk, Michael (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne ; CERN) ; Solfaroli Camillocci, Matteo (CERN) ; Wenninger, Jorg (CERN)
Collective instabilities can lead to a severe deterioration of beam quality, in terms of reduced beam intensity and increased beam emittance, and consequently a reduction of the collider’s luminosity. It is therefore crucial for the operation of the CERN’s Large Hadron Collider to understand the conditions in which they appear in order to find appropriate mitigation measures. [...]
