The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiments will collect unprecedented data volumes in the next Physics run, with high pile-up collisions resulting in events that require a complex processing. Hence, the collaborations have been required to update their Computing Models to optimize the use of the available resources and control the growth of resources, in the midst of widespread funding restrictions, without penalizing any of the Physics objectives. Design, Results, Evolution and Status of the ATLAS simulation in Point1 project.
/ Ballestrero, Sergio (University of Johannesburg, Department of Physics) ; Fressard-Batraneanu, Silvia Maria (CERN) ; Brasolin, Franco (INFN Bologna and Universita' di Bologna, Dipartimento di Fisica e Astronomia) ; Contescu, Alexandru Cristian (University Politehnica Bucharest) ; Fazio, Daniel (CERN) ; Di Girolamo, Alessandro (CERN) ; Lee, Christopher Jon (University of Johannesburg, Department of Physics) ; Pozo Astigarraga, Mikel Eukeni (CERN) ; Scannicchio, Diana (University of California, Irvine) ; Sedov, Alexey (Barcelona Tier-1) et al.
During the LHC long shutdown period (LS1), that started in 2013, the simulation in Point1 (Sim@P1) project takes advantage in an opportunistic way of the trigger and data acquisition (TDAQ) farm of the ATLAS experiment. The farm provides more than 1500 computer nodes, and they are particularly suitable for running event generation and Monte Carlo production jobs that are mostly CPU and not I/O bound. [...]

The LHC Tier1 at PIC: experience from first LHC run
/ Flix, J (Madrid, CIEMAT ; PIC, Bellaterra) ; Perez-Calero Yzquierdo, A (Madrid, CIEMAT ; PIC, Bellaterra) ; Acción, E (Barcelona, IFAE ; PIC, Bellaterra) ; Acin, V (Barcelona, IFAE ; PIC, Bellaterra) ; Acosta, C (Barcelona, IFAE ; PIC, Bellaterra) ; Bernabeu, G (Madrid, CIEMAT ; PIC, Bellaterra) ; Bria, A (Barcelona, IFAE ; PIC, Bellaterra) ; Casals, J (Madrid, CIEMAT ; PIC, Bellaterra) ; Caubet, M (Madrid, CIEMAT ; PIC, Bellaterra) ; Cruz, R (Barcelona, IFAE ; PIC, Bellaterra) et al.
This paper summarizes the operational experience of the Tier1 computer center at Port d’Informació Científica (PIC) supporting the commissioning and first run (Run1) of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The evolution of the experiment computing models resulting from the higher amounts of data expected after the restart of the LHC are also described..

Study of Various Photomultiplier Tubes with Muon Beams And Cerenkov Light Produced in Electron Showers
/ Chatrchyan, Serguei (YEREVAN) ; Khachatryan, Vardan (YEREVAN) ; Sirunyan, Albert M (YEREVAN) ; Mossolov, Vladimir (MINSK-NCPHEP) ; Shumeiko, Nikolai (MINSK-NCPHEP) ; De Wolf, Eddi A (ANTWERPEN) ; Ochesanu, Silvia (ANTWERPEN) ; Roland, Benoit (ANTWERPEN) ; Van Haevermaet, Hans (ANTWERPEN) ; Van Mechelen, Pierre (ANTWERPEN) et al.
The PMTs of the CMS Hadron Forward calorimeter were found to generate a large size signal when their windows were traversed by energetic charged particles. This signal, which is due to Cerenkov light production at the PMT window, could interfere with the calorimeter signal and mislead the measurements. [...]
