An Inertial Uni-Axial Interferometer-Based Accelerometer for Harsh Environments / Aliana Cervera, Gerard (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Solis Paiva, Santiago Andres (CERN) ; Serrano Galvez, Pablo (CERN) ; Sola Merino, Jorge (CERN) ; Butcher, Mark (CERN) ; Matheson, Eloise (CERN) ; di Castro, Mario (CERN)
For high-impact devices, subsequent vibrations have as much influence on the deterioration of the mechanical structure as the impact itself. To mitigate the consequences of both impacts and resulting vibrations, it is crucial to accurately understand the peak acceleration and vibration frequencies that originate in the structure. [...]

First Experience of Crystal Collimators During LHC Special Runs and Plans for the Future / D'Andrea, Marco (CERN ; U. Padua (main)) ; Avati, Valentina (CERN ; AGH-UST, Cracow) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Butcher, Mark (CERN) ; Deile, Mario (CERN) ; Di Castro, Mario (CERN) ; Dziedzic, Bartosz (Cracow, INP) ; Garcia Morales, Hector (CERN ; Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Gavrikov, Yury (St. Petersburg, INP ; CERN) ; Hiller, Karlheinz (DESY, Zeuthen) et al.
Bent crystals can deflect charged particles by trapping them within the potential well generated by neighboring crystalline planes and forcing them to follow the curvature of the crystal itself. This property has been extensively studied over the past decade at the CERN accelerator complex, as well as in other laboratories, for a variety of applications, ranging from beam collimation to beam extraction and in-beam fixed target experiments. Towards the Last Stages of the CERN’s AD-Target Area Consolidation Project and Recommissioning Plans to Resume Operation / Torregrosa, Claudio (CERN) ; Ahdida, Claudia (CERN) ; Bouvard, Aymeric (CERN) ; Broche, Alexandre (CERN) ; Burger, Stephane (CERN) ; Butcher, Mark (CERN) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Clerc, Vincent (CERN) ; De Macedo, Aurelio (CERN) ; De Man, Sven (CERN) et al.
Antiprotons are produced at CERN at the Antiproton Decelerator (AD) Target Area by impacting 26 GeV/c proton beams onto a fixed target. Further collection, momentum selection, and transport of the secondary particles - including antiprotons - towards the AD ring is realised by a 400 kA pulsed magnetic horn and a set of magnetic dipoles and quadrupoles. Vibration reduction techniques for stepper motors at standstill in high precision applications / Merino, Jorge Sola (CERN) ; Serrano Galvez, Pablo (CERN) ; Butcher, Mark (CERN) ; Di Castro, Mario (CERN) ; Masi, Alessandro (CERN)
Stepper motors are widely used in high precision positioning applications where reliability is an important factor. Field Oriented Control (FOC) can be used to damp the high-oscillatory dynamics of open-loop driven stepper motors and effectively reduce induced vibrations during motion. [...]

Effective Target Speed-Reduction Techniques for Industrial Interferometers / Butcher, Mark (CERN) ; Grec, Lucian-Mircea (CERN) ; di Castro, Mario (CERN) ; Masi, Alessandro (CERN)
In recent years the cost, size and complexity of use of interferometers have reduced to an extent where they are now more employable in industrial applications, where their high precision and contactless measurement benefits are needed. A limitation in many industrial interferometers, however, is the maximum target speed that can be tracked without loss of information. [...]

Gamma and proton irradiation tests on a piezoelectric actuator / Galvez, Pablo Serrano (CERN ; Tech. U. Madrid (main)) ; Paiva, Santiago Andres Solis (CERN ; Tech. U. Madrid (main)) ; Guillermain, Elisa (Tech. U. Madrid (main)) ; Butcher, Mark (Tech. U. Madrid (main)) ; Di Castro, Mario (CERN) ; Masi, Alessandro (CERN)
Piezoelectric actuators are candidates for use in radioactive environments but specific radiation tests are necessary to understand the radiation effects on the whole actuator assembly. The results of three irradiation tests on a piezoelectric actuator used for Crystal Collimation are presented. [...]

Crystal for slow extraction loss-reduction of the SPS electrostatic septum / Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Addesa, Francesca (INFN, Rome) ; Afonin, Alexander (Serpukhov, IHEP) ; Bestman, Patrick (CERN) ; Borg, Johan (Imperial Coll., London) ; Butcher, Mark (CERN) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Chesnokov, Yuri (Serpukhov, IHEP) ; Denisov, Alexander (St. Petersburg, INP) ; Di Castro, Mario (CERN) et al.
The use of a bent crystal was investigated in order to reduce the losses at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) electrostatic septum (ZS) during the slow extraction of 400 GeV/c protons toward the North Area. The crystal, installed a few meters upstream of the ZS, bends protons that would otherwise impinge on the ZS wires. [...]

Demonstration of loss reduction using a thin bent crystal to shadow an electrostatic septum during resonant slow extraction / Velotti, Francesco (CERN) ; Addesa, Francesca (INFN, Rome) ; Afonin, Alexander (Serpukhov, IHEP) ; Bestmann, Patrick (CERN) ; Borg, Johan (Imperial Coll., London) ; Butcher, Mark (CERN) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Chesnokov, Yuri (Serpukhov, IHEP) ; Denisov, Alexander (St. Petersburg, INP) ; Di Castro, Mario (CERN) et al.
A proof-of-principle experiment demonstrating the feasibility of using a thin, bent crystal aligned upstream of an extraction septum (ES) to increase the efficiency of the third-integer resonant slow extraction process has been carried out at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). With the primary aim of reducing the beam loss and induced radio-activation of the SPS, the crystal was aligned to both the beam and the septum to reduce by up to 40% the beam intensity impinging the ES and increase the intensity entering the external transfer line. Experiment exposing refractory metals to impacts of 440 GeV$/c$ proton beams for the future design of the CERN antiproton production target: Experiment design and online results / Torregrosa Martin, Claudio (CERN ; Valencia, Polytechnic U.) ; Perillo-Marcone, Antonio (CERN) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Gentini, Luca (CERN) ; Butcher, Mark (CERN) ; Muñoz-Cobo, José-Luis (Valencia, Polytechnic U.)
The HRMT27-RodTarg experiment employed the HiRadMat facility at CERN to impact intense 440 GeV proton beams onto thin rods 8 mm in diameter, 140 mm in length, and made of high-density materials such as Ir, W, Ta, Mo, and alloys. The purpose of the experiment was to reduce uncertainties on the CERN antiproton target material response and assess the material selection for its future redesign. [...]
