Performance of a UA1 hadron calorimeter prototype / Corden, M J ; Arnison, G ; Astbury, A ; Dowell, John D ; Edwards, M ; Eisenhandler, E F ; Ellis, Nick ; Garvey, J ; Gibson, W R ; Grant, D et al.
The hadron calorimeter for the UA1 experiment at the CERN SPS proton- antiproton collider consists of a lead-scintillator sandwich plus an iron-scintillator sandwich with wavelength shifter readout. The authors have tested prototype modules in muon and hadron beams in the momentum range from 0.7 to 90 GeV/c. [...]

The interest in e/sup +/e/sup -/ experiments at LEP energies / Ellis, Jonathan Richard (CERN)
A review is presented of various open theoretical questions and how LEP experiments may help answer them. Besides the conventional gauge theories of the strong, weak and electromagnetic interactions, LEP should also provide us with useful information relevant to grand unified theories, supersymmetry and dynamical symmetry breaking. [...]

New ideas in calorimetry / Botner, O (CERN)
The hadron calorimeter for the CERN ISR experiment R807 is of the fission compensating type, using /sup 238/U as absorber. The possibility of replacing part of the uranium by more easily accessible material without destroying the good properties of a pure uranium- scintillator calorimeter has been investigated. [...]

The UA5 streamer chamber experiment at the SPS pp collider / Rushbrooke, John G (CERN)
A multiparticle detector based on two large (6 m long) streamer chambers triggered by surrounding scintillation hodoscopes and viewed by cameras via image intensifiers is being assembled at CERN and tested at the ISR. Its purpose is to perform a first rapid visual survey of the new energy region afforded by the SPS pp collider. [...]

A large drift chamber with image read out to localize high energy electromagnetic showers / Bacci, C ; Bernabei, R ; Ceradini, F ; D'Angelo, S ; Lacava, F ; Moricca, M ; Paoluzi, L ; Salvini, G
The very forward region of the experiment UA1 at the CERN pp Collider will be equipped with calorimeters to detect photons and hadrons of energy 5-250 GeV. To localize electromagnetic showers large cell drift chambers will be housed between the modula of the calorimeters. [...]

Detectors with very high space resolution have been built in this laboratory and tested at CERN in order to investigate their possible use in high energy physics experiments. These detectors consist of thin layers of silicon crystals acting as ionization chambers. [...]

An aerogel Cerenkov counter for the AFS experiment / Henning, S ; Jarlskog, G ; Mjörnmark, U ; Nilsson, A ; Svensson, L
A large aerogel Cerenkov counter has been constructed for the open axial field magnets at the CERN ISR. Due to the detector position in a strong magnetic field, and limited space, an unconventional readout method has been employed using wave length shifter. [...]

Tests of a silica aerogel Cerenkov detector to be used in European Hybrid Spectrometer / Carlson, P J ; Johansson, K E ; Kesteman, J ; Norrby, J ; Pingot, O ; Tavernier, Stefaan ; Van Lancker, L
An 18 module Cerenkov detector with a total sensitive area of 2.3 m /sup 2/ having silica aerogel as radiator is being tested in a particle beam at CERN PS. The modules having a sensitive area of 23*55 cm/sup 2/ give typically a Cerenkov signal for beta =1 particles of 12 photoelectrons for silica aerogel of refractive index 1.03 and a thickness of 15 cm. A silica aerogel counter for large-acceptance hadron detection / Arnault, C ; Barberis, P L ; Bassompierre, Gabriel ; Burkhardt, W ; Coignet, G ; Dosselli, U ; Heusse, P ; Montanet, François ; Schneegans, M
In order to study the feasibility of large scale multicell counters, two prototypes with respective detection area 80*40 cm/sup 2/ and 65*31 cm/sup 2/ were constructed. The Cerenkov light produced in silica aerogel of refractive index n=1.03 and diffused in a well optimized box was detected with five quantacon photomultipliers. [...]
