Abstract The authors study the leakage field in electrostatic wire septums like those used for the extraction of the beam from the CERN 400 GeV proton accelerator (SPS). They show the advantage of placing 'clearing electrodes' along the beam which circulates inside the anode frame. Their use reduces the sparking rate of the wire septums and is therefore essential for efficient operation. (13 refs).
