Abstract The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is undergoing a major upgrade towards the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), which is set to deliver five times the nominal instantaneous luminosity of the LHC. This upgrade, scheduled for 2026-2028 during the Long Shutdown 3, includes the complete replacement of the on- and off-detector electronics of the ATLAS Tile Hadronic Calorimeter (TileCal) with a new read-out architecture. The TileCal PreProcessor (TilePPr) receives and processes the digitized signals from on-detector electronics and transmits them to the Front-End Link eXchange (FELIX) system, which serves as a data router for all sub-detectors and distributes Timing, Trigger and Control (TTC) signals to the TilePPr. The data is then forwarded by FELIX to the SoftWare Read-Out Driver (SWROD) computers, which perform detector-specific data processing To evaluate the new readout architecture and component prototypes, TileCal developed prototype detector modules ("Demonstrators") and exposed them to different particle beams at varying energies at CERN facilities. The data acquisition and processing software was developed to ensure backward compatibility with the legacy system, while data is being read out via FELIX and SWROD in parallel.
