Abstract | We propose to study the $\beta$-decay of $^{16}$N at ISOLDE with the aim of determining the branching ratio for $\beta\alpha$ decay on an absolute scale. There are indications that the previously measured branching ratio is in error by an amount significantly larger than the quoted uncertainty. This limits the precision with which the S-factor of the astrophysically important $^{12}$C($\alpha, \gamma)^{16}$O reaction can be determined. |
