The Central Coast Mariners are delighted to announce the arrival of Brazilian attacker Ronald Barcellos, on a loan deal until the end of the season from Portuguese first division club Portimonense.
The 21-year-old can play all across the front third, bolstering Mark Jackson’s forward options.
Barcellos was born in Belford Roxo, Rio de Janeiro, initially catching the eye of Brazilian giants Flamengo when competing in the ‘Favelas Cup’ at a young age.
Ronald was offered a 2-year-deal from 2019 to 2021 to play in their U17’s, where he would develop his power and explosiveness to accompany his natural vision, agility and skill.
Prior to his move to Europe, Barcellos also spent time in the academies of Brazilian top tier sides Vasco da Gama and Gremio.
This season, Barcellos has made eight appearances in the Liga Revelação, Portugal’s U23 league, scoring two goals.
The young forward is excited to get started on the Central Coast, looking forward to the remainder of the season.
“I am very thankful for the opportunity to play for this amazing club. I am going to work hard for the team to help us achieve the results that we want this season,” he said.
“I am coming here fresh and ready to go, in my short time in Australia so far I have settled in well and I’m ready to play. I look forward to making my debut for the Mariners at our incredible stadium in front of our fans.”
Central Coast Mariners Football Manager Mark Jackson is thrilled to have the young Brazilian join the squad.
“Ronald is a great addition to the squad for the remainder of the season. As a club we have looked at him a lot and have spoken to him and his coaches regularly. The relationship between us, Portimonense and the player has been building over a large period of time now,” Jackson said.
“We know a lot about him, he has huge potential, and we as a club can be a part of his journey. He will help the squad this season with his ability, and we can help him in return. We are excited to have him here as a part of the team.”
Barcellos has been added to our match day 20-player squad for today’s game against Melbourne City, with the Brazilian eligible to play. He will wear the number 22.
