Member in the Spotlight ~ Shoshana Pasternak at Invenergy! We love Shoshana's comment that the clean energy sector provides opportunities to learn how projects impact people, build relationships and hear different perspectives on ways to improve and modernize project development. 1. Where are you from? SP: Toronto 2. Where do you work, what's your job title and how long have you held that position? SP: Senior Associate, Government Affairs at Invenergy. I’ve worked at Invenergy since 2023. 3. When and why did you decide to work in the clean energy industry? SP: I started working in Energy within the Ontario government in 2019. When I joined, Ontario was at the cusp of a clean energy transition. At the time, many jurisdictions were still working on phasing out coal and so demand for new clean energy resources was increasing. Now, its equally exciting as electrification is increasing demand and the opportunity to contribute to a clean transition is expanding. I get to work in an industry that ensures the power stays on and helps reduce emissions. 4. What excites you the most about being in the clean energy sector? SP: Its exciting to help build something that people need and use everyday. Our sector ensures schools, hospitals and workplaces can run without black outs and businesses and households don’t have to stress about their hydro bill by competing and offering a fair price. We also get to create jobs while innovating to make electricity more accessible and affordable. 5. What do you find personally most challenging/rewarding in your career? SP: The energy sector is complex, and there are constantly policy changes that impact development. Problem solving and finding an approach that balances what communities want, what developers require to get projects done, and what the government needs is challenging, but very rewarding. So, while it is challenging, it provides an opportunity to learn more about how projects impact people, build relationships and hear new perspectives on how we can improve and modernize the way we develop projects. 6. What advice would you give a young female high school student wanting to pursue a higher education with the eventual goal of working in the clean energy industry? SP: The clean energy industry needs experts from many educational backgrounds, such as engineering, finance, business, and, in my case, politics. You will succeed best in a subject matter that is interesting to you. As you start your career, you should make sure not to be intimated by some rooms where you may be the only woman. The industry is progressive and accepting and working on creating a more equitable environment with more women in leadership positions, everyone in the room will be happy you are there and providing your perspective. Are you thinking of investing in PV technique or are you an installer? The Canada Energy Regulator projects that electricity demand in Canada will more than double by 2050, driven by the increasing electrification of various sectors and the imperative to achieve net-zero emissions targets by 2035 and 2050. This anticipated demand surge will necessitate a substantial expansion of renewable energy technologies, particularly solar photovoltaics (PV), which convert sunlight into electricity. In 2006, Pelland and Poissant evaluated the potential for PV systems on residential, commercial, and institutional buildings across Canada, estimating that these systems could meet approximately 29% of the electricity needs of these buildings annually. Since then, the cost of PV modules has decreased by roughly 90%, and advancements in technology have enhanced their efficiency, requiring less space to generate the same amount of power. Furthermore, the number of buildings in Canada has grown significantly. The current report revisits and refines the 2006 estimates of PV potential on Canadian buildings. It provides an updated analysis focusing on the technical potential of PV installations, considering all viable building surfaces irrespective of financial feasibility, grid capacity, or real-time supply and demand dynamics. This technical potential forms the basis for evaluating market potential, which will account for economic factors, grid integration, and other elements to gauge the role of PV in Canada's future electricity supply. A new statistical methodology developed by CanmetENERGY assesses the rooftop PV potential across Canadian provinces and territories, utilizing high-quality LiDAR and building footprint data from 11 municipalities. This methodology uniquely excludes only those surfaces that are technically unfeasible for PV installation, such as rooftop obstructions like chimneys. The analysis indicates that rooftop PV could potentially generate 247 TWh per year, covering approximately 76% of the current electricity consumption in residential and commercial/institutional buildings across Canada. The updated CanmetENERGY method suggests a rooftop PV potential of up to 300 GW for residential and commercial/institutional buildings. This represents a significant opportunity for investment in PV technology and for companies involved in its installation and deployment.

It seems like energy policies are constantly making headlines these days. Should Canada “axe the tax?” Is it time to end the tax breaks to Canadian fossil fuel companies and invest in renewable energy? Are electric vehicles a good investment? Should governments put the brakes on solar panels and wind turbines? These are big questions that matter for the economy, the environment and our futures. In answering these questions, people will likely consider the costs and benefits of each approach. Yet, people are not robots. People have thoughts, feelings and emotions. And they especially have strong feelings about climate change and energy sources. In our recent study published in Energy Policy, we brought together four psychologists, two sociologists and a lawyer to explore the role of emotions in making these decisions. We found that people’s concerns or worries about climate change shape how they view energy sources. In short, worries and concerns about climate change can spark enthusiasm for hydro, solar and wind and spur opposition to coal, oil and gas.
