Yay! My article on AI & HR has been published in CPHR Alberta Magazine🎉 I love using AI because it makes me more efficient and productive. But, like many of us, I also worry about its rapid growth. To truly tap into AI's potential, I try to see it as a partner that enhances my skills, not replaces them. A friend of mine recently received 2000 applications for a leave coverage posting 📝 (For context: this was a remote, mid-level marketing role with a fantastic hospitality company, posted on Indeed and open to applicants across Canada.) Take a moment to think about that: 2000 candidates. Now imagine the recruitment and HR team tasked with sorting through all those applications, often spending just a few seconds on each one. And that’s just one position - now picture the workload for multiple roles at the same time. When you don't hear back after submitting a job application, this could be why. Recruiters are frequently overwhelmed by hundreds, if not thousands, of applications, along with LinkedIn messages and emails. Out of 2000 candidates, many may have more experience, certifications, or stronger industry connections. In such a competitive market, especially for students and recent grads, securing entry- or mid-level roles can feel like a real challenge. That’s why it’s crucial to: - Keep applying to as many relevant roles as possible. - Tailor each application to highlight why you're the best fit. - Continue building your skills and experience, even outside formal work. - Network and connect with professionals and employers in your industry. It’s tough out there, but don’t let that discourage you. Stay confident, recognize the unique value you bring, and leverage every available resource. BC issued up to 150 ITAs under the BCPNP On September 24, 2024, the Government of British Columbia held new invitation draws under the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BCPNP) and issued invitations to apply to qualified candidates in tech, healthcare, childcare, construction, and veterinary care occupations. In the tech draw, the province invited 57 candidates. The minimum score for candidates invited in this draw was 117 points. BC issued 42 ITAs to candidates under the childcare-targeted draw for early childhood educators (NOC 42202) who scored 83 points and more. British Columbia issued 24 ITAs to candidates in the Healthcare-targeted draw with a minimum score of 99 points. The province also issued 22 invitations to candidates working in the construction sector. To receive an ITA, candidates must score at least 89 points. Furthermore, up to five invitations have been issued to candidates working in veterinary care occupations. British Columbia issued up to 150 ITAs in this draw. Here's a critically important report from Canada highlighting the role and experience of indigenous people and traditional knowledge in facing and dealing with the effects of climate change. As the western world faces up to the fact that we live in a pluriverse of perspectives (thanks Sahana Chattopadhyay for your excellent input) and no longer can for any one assume dominance, indigenous voices are now thankfully, but slowly, being heard and listened to. May this trend accelerate. Highly relevant to the work being done by Regenerative Vanua, plus Regina Scheyvens and Apisalome Movono and many others in the Pacific.

A few months ago, executive compensation in the non-profit sector made big waves in Canadian news with reasonable ripples across the sector in op eds and hot takes - however it's important to put it all in context. A focus on attraction, attrition and internal equity misses the point entirely. Rarely do we see ratios larger than 1:15 in large public fundraising non-profits, and it is more common to see rations ranging from 1:1.5 - 1:10. We should reserve our disdain and censure for CEOs making 25-500 times their company's median salary.

The survey says...presenting for 55 min is easier than 5! (see previous post). I didn't say easy. I said easier. And because I take my own medicine, here's my 3-2-1 for today: 3️⃣ Celebrating: trusting myself to even apply to speak, challenging myself to present in webinar format, enjoying every minute!! 2️⃣ Noticing: I'm less comfortable if I can't see the audience, I can really talk about the 3-2-1 for a whole hour! 1️⃣ Improving: My story telling skills Thank you CPHR Alberta for including a conference offering that was about disrupting ourselves. Indigenous workplace inclusion is a strategic business growth opportunity- not a social ‘right thing to do’. I don't care about educating non-Indigenous about Indigenous cultures. I know not enough about mine and even less about others. I am not seeking to demonstrate my culture's worthiness so Canadians will accept me. Dignity is not yours to give. If you will not give it, I will take it. Instead, I think Canadians have to learn about the historical and current treatment of Indigenous in Canada and ask themselves #WTF are we doing? For instance, BMO sells a Chicago Blackhawks Mastercard and a Social Equity rep advised me to look at the work of a #ChangeTheName group that works with shareholders to ask for our dignity. The racist assumptions in that statement are exhausting. Clearly, not someone informed enough to understand the damage of their actions. That is why non-Indigenous Canadians should take my course on #SystemicInjustice.
