For the first time in many years, there is spare pipeline capacity out of the Alberta oil sands, thanks to the Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion project. Crews completed 988 km of new pipeline, 12 new pump stations, 19 new storage tanks, and three new berths at Westridge Marine Terminal in Burnaby. Total capital investment is estimated to have contributed $26.3 billion in GDP, 67,423 person-year full-time equivalent jobs, and $2.9 billion in taxes to the Canadian economy during construction from 2018 to 2023. It’s estimated that the expanded Trans Mountain system will pay $3.7 billion in wages, generate $9.2 billion in GDP, and pay $2.8 billion in government taxes, over the next 20 years.
