***LEGISLATED! - EVEN MORE BREAKING NEWS: CCUS, Clean Technology, Hydrogen & Clean Technology Manufacturing ITCs*** Tonight, following our CleanTech North webinar on the Clean Technology Tax Credits, the Senate of Canada | Sénat du Canada not only adopted Bill C-69, but Royal Assent was given by the Governor General shortly before 8pm EST for both this bill and Bill C-59. This means that the first FOUR Clean Economy tax credits have been passed into legislation. Canada has now taken the first step to our greener future, unlocking the #CCUS, #CleanTechnology, #Hydrogen and the #CleanTechnologyManufacturing ITCs with these credits representing the majority of the estimated $93 billion in Clean Economy Tax Credits. Companies adopting or manufacturing any of the clean technology properties referenced in these Bills can now claim tax credits based on what became available for use after the respective date of their implementation (as far back as Jan 1, 2022). HERE'S SOME FREE ADVICE FOR ALBERTA'S CABINET AND Danielle Smith... Energy security and food security are just the obverse and reverse sides of the same coin, as are the sectors supporting them. They mean much to the province's future. And their vitality is potentially in peril. So, when contemplating provincial response to the federal Bill C-59 and the changes it enacted recently to Canada's Competition Act and its greenwashing provisions, why doesn't cabinet link Alberta's oil and gas sector and its agrifood industry into a double-barreled advocacy-and-awareness juggernaut? The twin pillars of our economy could find themselves subjected to a barrage of unwarranted and irritating criticism that could stultify important progress both sectors are making on environmental fronts, as a result of the new legislation and related regulations. To be clear to virtue-signalers: greenwashing sucks. Everyone should be protected from shameless hucksterism claims. In and of themselves, the changes have merit in that they seek higher standards of proof to support claims. What's more problematic is the context in which the changes (which merely strengthen existing rules) are occurring. No meaningful consultation. Nothing that resembles clarity, cogency or coherence. -- or even, gasp, collaboration with the country's economic engines. To that end, what also sucks is vague and ambiguous regulation that instead of sharpening regulatory focus turns opponents of a sector (say energy and agriculture) into de facto regulators with little or no onus on their own "truth-telling" obligations. In many ways, that's the way new provisions will work that strengthen access to "private action" via which NGOs (and others) can ask the Competition Bureau for permission to take legal action against companies and groups they believe are making unwarranted environmental impact claims. Understandably, they're gleefully rubbing their hands in anticipation of actions they can undertake that will mostly be fought out in the headlines in ways that achieve their ends without ever going near a courtroom. The result is that progress on key environmental fronts is potentially being pushed back underground as the two sectors out on an abundance of caution go radio-silent on their plans and aspirations. No one benefits from such a cone-of-silence approach. Danielle Smith's government would be wise to convene an ad hoc council of leaders from both energy and agriculture to detail for her cabinet the potentially negative consequences of Ottawa's overreach. That includes both domestic and international contexts in which the province's reputation as a place where good stuff gets done may be irreparably harmed. Armed with that dual context, the Smith government has stronger stability-and-security-of-supply hand to play. David Mann, K.C. Canada’s energy industry needs a carbon policy “time-out.” Canada’s current policies are already too complex. Adding more layers on top of a shaky foundation will not result in more GHG reductions, and may result in less investment, not more. Before introducing additional policy action — like the proposed cap for oil and gas sector emissions — we need to pause and assess what’s already in place across all energy systems and orders of government. Establish a 2030 timeline for phasing out the sale of fossil-gas fired heating and hot water equipment Impacts A growing number of countries have passed regulations phasing out gas fired heating equipment, as has the province of BC. Policy certainty is needed to allow manufacturers, distributors and installers prepare for the transition to electric heat pumps and other non-fossil alternatives. Clear regulatory signals will also limit investment in stranded assets and ensure decarbonization happens in the most cost-effective way possible –at time of construction or HVAC replacement. Heat pumps also provide high efficiency cooling, which protects the health of Canadians during increasingly frequent extreme heat events. Glitter parade is leading us to Net Nowhere Fast.
