Selling a product to a professional using the words “Easy” and “Simple”. During my time at Wix, I had a long relationship with some important words for us as a company and what those words represent. It all started back in 2008 with "Free Website," the first real value we brought to our users. When we wanted to add more flavor to our brand and offering, Natalie Shell added "Stunning" to the mix, and we loved it. It wasn't just part of the brand; it was part of what we believed our product should represent. Tons of templates we launched and features we created were in line with this beautiful word. Then 2012 came, and the shift from Flash to HTML 5 took away some of our "Stunningness," so we moved more towards "Easy" and "Free." I remember sitting in the room when the creative team came up with our first Super Bowl ad: "It's that easy." We felt that for those years of our company, this was the right term for us, but we also knew that we were missing some professional elements of our brand. How could web professionals (who represent 30% of our business) promote themselves while we were saying it's easy and simple to create a professional website? I don't want to make this post too long, so I won't explain how we added the word "Professional" to the mix (2017) and brought back "Stunning," but trust me when I say that every time we made these adjustments, we did it in full alignment with our product. Fast forward to 2024. I believe the number one word that will speak to professionals in the next two to three years in almost every occupation will be "Efficiency." In my small world, marketing people who don't use AI tools to make their lives easier in some tasks will be left behind, while their competitors shine. So the words "Easy" and "Simple," which professionals used to hate so much, will again become their words in the future. Why your primary metric matters in a/b testing: It’s not always about transaction rate; the metric should be closely tied to the specific change you're testing. For example, if you're tweaking a product detail page (PDP), "adds to cart" would be a more relevant primary metric than transactions.
