When it comes to financial fraud, we ain’t seen nothing yet. Open banking and a new real-time payments network are coming to Canada, and they will provide criminals with new vectors for exploitation. That’s why the banking industry is urging the federal government to combat financial fraud by implementing an anti-scam action plan that takes a multi-industry approach. “This is a shared responsibility,” the Canadian Bankers Association wrote in a recent submission to the House of Commons standing committee on finance. “Canadians, government, financial institutions, telecommunication companies, online platforms, technology companies, law enforcement, and the courts all have a significant role to play in this fight.” #fraud #payments #financialcrime #banks #fintech #cdnpoli #scams
Opinion: Canada needs an action plan to combat financial scams ahead of open banking, real-time payments

CIBC rounds out its CEO succession template with plans for Jon Hountalas, who took on an unusually large portfolio early last year after some chaos in the executive suite, to start his transition to retirement. Hountalas becomes vice-chair, and Susan Rimmer becomes head of commercial banking and wealth. CIBC already announced part one of this plan earlier in the year when Hratch Panossian took over retail banking https://lnkd.in/dn6bAAxt #banking

I'm fresh off covering the Olympics and back to corporate law land. In news this week: The Stronachs have resolved a bitter five-year court battle over alleged mismanagement of the family fortune, which could potentially be worth hundreds of millions of dollars. // If you've got other interesting stuff on the go - let me know: [email protected] https://lnkd.in/gC2Xy5Fx

No mention of price in today's announcement that Rexall is being sold to Birch Hill -- which suggests the sum is immaterial to McKesson. Meanwhile McKesson bought Rexall for $2.9-billion in 2017 (and took multiple writedowns since) https://lnkd.in/g9KFUHcg #pharmacy #privateequity

Like many executives following the pandemic, Kira Sherman manages an all-remote team. She has three direct reports working in sales positions who she oversees as the vice-president of business development at Blade Air, a Canadian company that sells air quality products. At first, when Ms. Sherman stepped into the role in 2022, she allowed her team to leave their cameras off during virtual meetings, but she’s since switched to a cameras-on policy. “Making that shift to mandatory cameras-on has had a huge impact on my team and the culture,” she explains. “We’re human, at the end of the day. We crave that eye contact. We want to know that people are engaged and paying attention to us.”
Frequent feedback and redefining goals help remote teams overcome common hurdles

I would not have a career as a visual journalist if it weren’t for the photojournalism program at Loyalist College, which is now being shut down. The focus on the technical and artistic craft, paired with journalistic storytelling and ethics was unmatched. Daily discussion and critiques with the dedicated faculty gave me the confidence to speak in a new language. I was encouraged to be more curious and empathetic, to look deeper at photos and video (long before the explosion of AI) and to offer and accept criticism openly with fellow students. There was also a special system of direct guidance from graduates working as professionals in these atypical roles. While post-secondary isn’t the only pathway to any profession, I’m worried about what the loss of this unique program means for the future of journalism in Canada. And I’m heartbroken to think of all the possible students who have lost the chance to even consider it as one pathway. See the The Globe and Mail story and the photos and thoughts from Loyalist College Photojournalism grads over the years: https://lnkd.in/gWE92WcX
For photojournalists, the end of Loyalist College’s program leaves a void in Canada’s stories
