Recently, Design Milk featured a new home in the Bay Area, led by design principal Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA, with interiors by NICOLEHOLLIS and landscape by Andrea Cochran Landscape Architecture, Inc. Designed for an active family, the home embraces its natural surroundings, creating a private oasis within the landscape that integrates architecture, art, and the outdoors. “This project organizes a home around two very different functions: formal spaces for hosting and entertaining, and much more casual family spaces. We are eagerly anticipating the public opening of Kìwekì Point (formerly Nepean Point) in Ottawa, ON, this year. Our team worked with Spearhead as specialty engineers on the Whispering Point pavilion at the western tip of the site, which provides shelter and spectacular views of Parliament Hill and the riverfront. The curving, undulating canopy structure is built from Alaskan Yellow Cedar frames pre-assembled into clusters of three and connected using thin laminated CLT top and back surface panels. Careful detailing was paramount for this project - extreme variations in moisture content required precise thermal stress evaluations, while a specialized base connection was constructed to allow each frame to be pivoted and rolled out of place if needed.
