When your summer vacation turns into a mini mass timber tour….. It was fantastic to see the different scopes, sizes and purposes Kalesnikoff Mass Timber is being used across British Columbia. It really highlights the versatility of Mass Timber and all of the amazing ways people are finding to use it!

Lot's of progress is being made on the River District Permanent Energy Center project. This 14,800 sq. ft. build features DFL CLT walls, Glulam columns and beams, and CLT mezzanine and roof panels. Proper bracing and coordination of deliveries are crucial to the success of mass timber builds, and we're proud of the meticulous planning and execution by our team on this one. Exciting News! Our Project Manager, Hugh Grady, is set to attend the Advancing Construction Decarbonization conference in Denver. Hugh will be presenting alongside our project team from the Western Washington University project earlier this year. His session, "Maximizing Project Sustainability: From Cradle to Grave," will delve into strategies for maintaining sustainable project execution, overcoming challenges, and assessing success metrics. The WWU project (pictured below) is a groundbreaking four-story, 54,000-square-foot Mass Timber CLT and Glulam building. Designed by Perkins&Will, this engineering and computer science facility is the region's first carbon-neutral academic structure, housing programs in electrical engineering, computer science, and energy science. Kalesnikoff played a critical role, providing fabrication, 3D modeling, and pre-construction coordination for seamless integration with other trades. A big thank you to the AIA Seattle Mass Timber Committee for organizing such a great tour of Mercer Middle School. Participants were particularly impressed with the speed of erection, a testament to the successful collaboration between Kalesnikoff, the general contractor, steel subcontractors, and MEP subs. This project exemplifies how effective collaboration through an interdisciplinary Virtual Design Construction (VDC) program can lead to remarkable results.   Thanks again for having us! Kalesnikoff is proud to be a part of one of the largest active projects in BC— The Royal BC Museum's new Collections and Research Building (CRB) in Colwood. Slated to open in 2026, this 15,200 square-metre facility will house the Province’s collections, research departments, and the BC Archives. This state-of-the-art building will use mass timber construction, meeting CleanBC energy efficiency standards and achieving LEED Gold certification. The CRB will not only safely house invaluable collections and archives but also provide learning spaces and enhanced access to these resources for all British Columbians. Its unique design will offer interactive displays and opportunities for the public to observe researchers at work, both in person and online. We are proud to share the significant energy savings achieved through our recent kiln drying process improvements which helped reduce our CO2 emissions! Kiln drying is an essential step in lumber production, where we utilize low pressure steam to heat, dry and stabilize the boards that are later used in mass timber products. A special thanks to Magnus Global for their collaborative efforts in helping us achieve these positive results. Their Magnus Aquafilm-V technology forms an ultra-thin molecular film barrier between metal surfaces and water to prevent corrosion and scaling. This all-in-one, all-organic technology provides numerous benefits, including better heat transfer, reduced blowdown, and carryover, resulting in significant efficiency gains for our steam boiler networks, allowing us the drying our lumber better and faster! In 2023, we were able to reduce our natural gas consumption by 14%. This reduction is equivalent to the energy used in 132 homes for an entire year. These improvements not only enhance our production efficiency but also have a positive impact on our community by significantly lowering emissions and conserving energy.
