Intuitively we know: nature creates value. Urban trees, for example, clean our air, shade our homes, absorb carbon pollution. But what's an urban tree's worth on an investor's balance sheet? Zero. How do we change that? That was the central question at today's #RICanada24 Investing in Nature Panel. Our Nature Investment Hub / Smart Prosperity Institute colleague, Paige Olmsted reminded us that, in Canada, we have massive, in tact landscapes that create a vast array of values. What we don't have are the financial mechanisms that make conserving those landscapes more economically attractive than destroying them. We need to tip the scales in nature's favour - and that's what conservation finance can help achieve. As the communication lead for our Nature Investment Hub Solution Space, Alice Irene works every day to help bridge together the people, opportunities, and capital needed to conserve Canada's critical natural spaces, for the survival of our species and all life. Her memoir asks us what it means to live with both the joyous wonder of nature's gifts and the ceaseless despair of its destruction. It leaves us with the hope that while each of us, alone, may never "be enough" to save all that we love, we are never actually alone. Appropriate #LabourDay weekend read ⬇ Building our cities requires a huge investment of human talent and resources. But it doesn't require the toll on our natural resources that it's taking today. The construction sector is currently the largest consumer of raw materials worldwide. Building this way not only produces a significant volume of greenhouse gas emissions, it costs more too. “If we want to get to net zero, we actually have to think about the materials in our buildings and how we use them,” says Paul Shorthouse, managing director at Circular Economy Leadership Canada. “We don’t have to constantly extract new materials to build all the time.” Our Circular Economy Leadership Canada Solution Space is partnering with players across the construction and real estate sector to identify and implement circular building practices.
