We were pleased to host Candace Laing, the new president and CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, for a tour of the Port of Vancouver’s inner harbour. The visit provided a valuable opportunity to showcase the port’s vital role in Canada’s trade network. Together, we explored ways to strengthen collaboration in support of Canadian businesses and communities across the country.

This tour has proven to be a major economic force, and it’s about to make waves in Canada’s two biggest cities. Our economists at the Business Data Lab dug into the numbers and looked at how Swift’s 6 shows in #Toronto and 3 in #Vancouver will impact the economies of these two major Canadian cities over the next month. Right now, both Vancouver and Toronto are among the least optimistic cities in Canada. They’re ranked 16th and 17th, respectively, out of the top 20 cities, according to our Business Expectations Index. Toronto, in particular, is having a tough year, with sales down almost 9% compared to last year — the worst performance in the country. Vancouver isn’t far behind, with a 1% dip in sales as well. Following a difficult couple of weeks where the movement of goods worth billions of dollars was disrupted by labour disputes at our largest ports on both sides of the country, I spoke with Global News’ Touria Izri about the long-term impacts of shutting down important trade infrastructure. 🚢 Our international trading partners have to believe in Canadian businesses’ ability to reliably serve customers abroad. Canada saw modest job gains of 15,000 in October, falling short of the expected 27,000, with the unemployment rate holding steady at 6.5%. The big concern? The labour force participation rate dipped to 64.8%, its lowest since 1997 (excluding the pandemic years), which could have an impact on future economic growth. While the youth employment sector showed some positive signs with a gain of 33,000 jobs, the overall youth unemployment rate remains high at 12.8%. On the wage front, average hourly wages rose by 4.9% compared to last year, which may influence the Bank of Canada's next decision on interest rates. “Ready for chaos” — great chat with Mark Rendell at The Globe and Mail yesterday about the impact a second Trump presidency could have on our economy… get ‘ready’ folks: “Canada needs to step up on a range of issues if it wants to maintain favourable access to U.S. markets. That means spending more on the military to meet Canada’s NATO commitments, emphasizing Arctic defence and working with the Americans to address the issue of mass migration from Latin American and Caribbean countries.

A great piece by Ian Austen in The New York Times showcasing the Canadian perspective on the US Election, with highlights of the Chambre de commerce du Canada (Canada)'s recent report by Trevor Tombe: 👉 About 3.6 billion dollars in trade occurs between the two countries daily. 👉 Any sweeping tariff will immediately cut Canada’s economic output by 45 billion Canadian dollars. As pointed out by my colleague Matthew Holmes in the article: “The most benign of tariffs that [Trump] has floated will have a recessionary impact on Canada that will lead to job losses and will lead to a further decline in our terrible productivity rate.”
