🚨 Season six of Building Good is here! 🚨 The quality of wood is changing. Modern virgin lumber is less dense and grown faster than wood that was harvested from natural old growth forests, but logging what's left of mature forests isn't sustainable. Eric Law, co-founder and CEO at Urban Machine has a solution. Up until now, reclaiming old lumber from decommissioned buildings was labour intensive and expensive, but Eric has a system using robots that make recovering timber an obvious choice. "The cool thing about wood is it stores carbon—compared to steel and concrete that generate a lot. And so if you look at it from an environmental perspective, you have a beautiful product that’s more sustainable until you glue it all together, and then it makes the recycle path really hard." - Eric Law in episode one of season six, Teaching Old Wood New Tricks. September is #SuicidePreventionMonth. Many of us within the AEC industry work in roles that are high stress. There is also an unsettling statistic that construction workers struggle with mental health concerns more than the average. In the U.S., male construction workers have a 65% higher suicide rate than all other male workers (CDC, 2022). Trina Colpitts, President at 500 Miles for Mental Health, joined us recently to talk about the consequences of toxic work place cultures, and her mission to help leaders address stresses that can lead to mental health risks. Mother Nature has been engineering for billions of years. Biomimicry is an evolutionary design process that’s been adapted into the world of architecture. Pulling shapes from the natural world can improve energy efficiency, design functions, and build creative spaces. “There are biomimicry methodologies out there but I feel like, as a species, we’re still just scrambling to figure out how to do it. The most effective way I find it to be done is to identify the function: what is it that you want your design to do?” - Jamie Miller, global director of biomimicry at B+H Architects. Globally, companies and organizations are moving towards being net-zero, incorporating climate resilience policies and new smart technology. But what if there was a way for educators and industry professionals to work together? Melanie Ross, Research Chair for the Green Building Technology Access Centre at Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), talked with us about blending academia and industry to increase sustainability in construction. "Continuing to share knowledge and resources is important. There’s still lots to do. I’m personally a very big fan of collaboration." Starting a new job in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry can be daunting. Especially for women and non-binary folks. But what if we empowered them to succeed on site? Nora Spencer, MSW, founder of Hope Renovations, empowers women and non-binary people through construction training and internship programs. Nora says, "When you hold power tools in your hands among a group of supportive women, your confidence soars! It instills a newfound self-belief, perhaps never tapped into before." "In my opinion, Digital Twins are the next phase of existing facility management platforms." - Mohamed Adel, Digital Construction Director at Bird Construction. Digital twins were first used by NASA in the early 2010s, and now it's a widespread practice across different industries. Blending digital simulations into physical systems has been adapting into the construction industry, improving safety, logistics tracking, and streamlining project handovers. Mohamed highlights the impact of digital twins in architecture, engineering, and construction, and how we can enhance project management and facility operations. With recent flooding in metropolitan areas like Toronto, Montreal, and New York, have you ever wondered if there's a better way to solve these problem? When municipalities factor sponginess into urban planning, they can avoid these problems all together. Sponge cities intentionally use blue and green areas (bodies of water and green spaces) to help mitigate flooding. "This is critical, as research from the World Economic Forum shows blue-green infrastructure is effective at managing water and 50 per cent more cost-effective, on average, than man-made alternatives, delivering 28 per cent more added value. " - Charles Ormsby, Arup, Canadian climate, and sustainability services leader Charles dives into the world of sponge cities in our latest blog, Sponge Cities and Nature Based Solutions.
