[ Advocacy update ] A companion piece to the Cross-Jurisdictional Analysis is currently in the hands of the Attorney General. “The Time to Act Promptly is Now: A Paper on the Benefits of Prompt Payment and Adjudication Legislation” outlines the objectives and benefits of Prompt Payment Legislation and Adjudication. Read here: https://lnkd.in/g4a8cA46 "The construction industry in British Columbia (“BC”) is at a crossroads. As identified in the Cross-jurisdictional Legislative Comparison of Prompt Payment and Adjudication Regimes Across Canada report (the “BCCA Cross-Jurisdictional Comparative Report”), there has been a major shift in Canadian and international jurisdictions towards the adoption of prompt payment and adjudication legislation applicable to construction. Despite this, BC has yet to modernize its construction legislation, perpetuating a situation of chronic payment delay throughout the industry. Currently, the ripple effect of late payment is felt far beyond the job site, permeating all aspects of construction and into the general economy of BC." #BCConstruction #bcpoli

Matt, we agree. At BCCA, we're committed to doing everything we can to support the mental and physical health of the construction industry’s workforce. BCCA fully supports this inclusive initiative, which will bring positive change to the construction industry by respecting the dignity and improving the experience of BC's construction workforce. Our industry is committed to clean and hygienic washroom facilities and recognizes the thousands of construction workers who fought for these changes. We will work with WorkSafeBC to ensure our member companies are aware of the changes to the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation and understand what is required to comply. This is simply the right thing to do. In 2024, construction workers should have access to modern washroom facilities. On behalf of Electrical Contractors Association of British Columbia (ECABC) I was pleased to support the initiative, and contribute throughout the process to improve WorkSafeBC's regulation. To their credit, they did listen and made some important adjustments. The final regulation isn't perfect, but it's absolutely a step in the right direction. We need to recognize that cleaning and maintenance remains vital, regardless of facility type. But ultimately the baseline experience in a modern facility is an improvement over a portapotty-type. There are two items I'll be watching going forward as potential challenges: 1) The rapid implementation date (Oct 1) worries me. It's a political calculation to get it in before the election, and could create logistics/availability challenges while suppliers adjust. This could create an unnecessarily frustrating experience early on if expectations and timelines can't be met due to a lack of available facilities. 2) Enforcement. It must be even and consistent to ensure that contractors who are following the rules are not being commercially disadvantaged and losing bids to those who aren't pricing this change into their bids. I've consistently flagged this and I am worried based on what was said yesterday by the Province that there may be unintended consequences to the competitive landscape. https://lnkd.in/g7fea7dU
