Despite large neural networks, like LLMs, demonstrating remarkable abilities, training them require excessive GPU memory. We propose Flora, a sub-linear memory optimizer with momentum and adaptive learning rates which dramatically reduces the GPU memory compared to Adam, while achieving comparable or slightly better results for pre-training. Compared to GaLore and LoRA, it is more memory efficient and yields better model quality in pre-training and fine-tuning.
