About us
BC Children's Hospital Research Institute conducts discovery, translational and clinical research to benefit the health of children and their families. We are supported by BC Children's Hospital Foundation; are part of BC Children’s Hospital and the Provincial Health Services Authority; and work in close partnership with the University of British Columbia. We offer basic science and clinical research mentorship that is second to none. Our researchers rank among the country’s best and continue to make internationally recognized contributions to their fields. At present, the institute has more than 300 trainees in programs of study ranging from pathology, reproductive and developmental sciences, medicine and microbiology, to epidemiology, health services research, and nursing. Our trainees benefit from the rich interdisciplinary and collaborative environment the institute provides, because of its physical setting on a hospital campus and the scope of research undertaken here.

Earlier this month, we were joined by four students who were awarded the 2024 Mini Med School Scholarship! These students were selected out of 60 applicants for the scholarship program. Each of the students received $1,000 towards their post-secondary education and spent a week on-site at BCCHR, gaining new research skills under the supervision of a mentor. All four students will be attending UBC in the fall. This year's MMS Scholarship recipients: 🌟 Shaylee Martin (Queen Margaret's School, Duncan) Mentor: Katarina Zosel, Lynn Research Team 🌟 Harnoor Dhaliwal (Khalsa Secondary School, Surrey) Mentor: Simran Samra, Turvey Research Team 🌟 Nathania So (Richmond Christian School, Richmond) Mentor: Kwestan Safari, Sly Research Team 🌟 Harry Lee (Riverside Secondary School, Port Coquitlam) Mentor: Kwestan Safari, Sly Research Team Thank you to all the students who joined us for an unforgettable week. Did you know that drowning is the third leading cause of injury-related death to children in BC? This year, National Drowning Prevention Week takes place July 21–27, and the BC Injury Research and Prevention Unit (BCIRPU) at BC Children's Hospital highlights water safety facts and tips to help you prepare for a safe and fun summer by the water. "Think ahead, be prepared, and stay within arms-reach of your children when they are in, on, or near the water,” says Dr. Shelina Babul, investigator at BCCHR and director of BCIRPU. “When boating, ensure that you have all of the required safety gear on board, including a Transport Canada-approved personal flotation device or life jacket for the driver and each passenger. Make sure that they fit properly, are in good condition and, most importantly, that you wear them! Life jackets and personal flotation devices save lives!” For more drowning prevention tips, visit bcchr.info/3WBZyvD. Yesterday, we were joined by the Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Sport and Physical Activity, and the Member of Parliament for Vancouver Granville, Taleeb Noormohamed, as they announced more than $47 million in federal funding for innovative projects to help support and retain members of the health workforce by improving research, planning, and health workforce data. $11.5 million will go to the Health Workforce for System Transformation grant which consists of 15 projects along with one Evidence Support and Knowledge Mobilization Hub. Two of the 15 projects that received funding are led respectively by BC Children's Hospital Research Institute (BCCHR) investigators Dr. Jennifer Coelho and Dr. Alison Elliott. The funding will enable Dr. Jennifer Coelho and her team to roll out a new Provincial Training Hub to increase capacity for clinicians who care for children and youth with eating disorders. The funding will also support Dr. Alison Elliott and her team in integrating genetics counsellors into new areas of clinical service. These projects were co-funded by Michael Smith Health Research BC. This week, we are honored to welcome four students through the Verna J. Kirkness Education Foundation program! This initiative supports Indigenous high school students with scholarships to spend one week conducting research in the fields of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. For the first time, @BCCHresearch is hosting students from across Canada: 🌟 Shilee Minoose, Edmonton 🌟 Mackenzie Su, Vancouver 🌟 Linnaya Boyer, Winnipeg 🌟 Lucas Hiscock, Newfoundland Shilee and Mackenzie are working with the Hutcheon and Liauw research teams on improving care for newborns and high-risk pregnancies using big data. They'll dive into electronic medical records to find patterns in urgent transfers for specialist care across BC. Linnaya and Lucas are joining the Klein Geltink research team to study immune cells. Their projects include isolating immune cells, activating them in the lab, and measuring nutrient uptake to understand how it affects infection-fighting capabilities. Our immune system is essential for helping us stave off microbes, viruses, and a host of other disease-causing microorganisms. Before a child is born, their immune system is dormant but waiting to be activated, and then it ramps up following birth. Previously, the nature of this reduced prenatal immune response was not well known. BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute investigators Dr. Pascal Lavoie and Dr. Ramon Klein Geltink found in a new study evidence of a molecular process that keeps the immune system on a "pilot light setting." Understanding this process could eventually lead to therapeutic interventions for sepsis, lung disease, and other complications in premature newborns.
