This article will examine Rabenu Yaacov ben Meir's, better known as Rabenu Tam, grandson of Rashi (France 1100 – 1171 of the Tosafists) use of the Yerushalmi Talmud.
The Yerushalmi Talmud was not in extensive use in the middle ages. This article will first describe the use of the Yeushalmi by the European sages and then will try to depict Rabenu Tam's knowledge of Yerushalmi and the purposes for which he quotes this Talmud.
Although Rabenu Tam had at least some of the Yerushalmi tractates in his library, his main allusion the Yerushalmi is from secondary sources such as Rabenu Hananel, Rav Nissim Gaon and others.
This article will claim that Rabenu Tam'ss interest in the Yerushalmi was not methodical and encompassing. He did not treat the Yerushalmi as an authoritative Halakhic source.

In the scholarly literature he is considered a French scholar, but, as will be demonstrated in this article, this assumption is erroneous. Though he was born in Germany, he travelled to France in order to study under Rabbeinu Tam, then returned to Germany to teach in Mainz. After a few years, he migrated back to France, where he was active until his death. This fact is significant for three reasons: (1) like Ashkenazi scholars, and in contrast to French scholars, Rabbi Hayim opposed immigration to the Land of Israel; (2) he taught and interpreted the order Qodashim-and specifically the tractate Zebahim-in line with Ashkenazi scholars; (3) his son wrote a commentary on Ashkenazi piyyutim that contains many French words. That the prayer rite was Ashkenazi but the language French reflects the family's migration pattern.

This article demonstrates the existence of a hierarchical rabbinical court system in northern France in the twelfth century. In the second half of the century this system was headed by the court of Rabbenu Tam, active in Ramerupt, near Troyes. This 'appellate court' cancelled the rulings of other courts, including those of the central court in Paris. Most of the appeals that were directed to the Ramerupt court concerned divorces, while it did not review civil law cases. I suggest that this discrepancy was caused by Rabbenu Tam's desire to establish uniform halakhah and practice throughout France in the realm of divorce law. As regards civil law, however, he tended to reinforce the authority of the local courts, whose members came from the scholarly elite, at the expense of the traditional communal leadership.

Rabbi Jacob ben Meir, better known as Rabbenu Tam (1100–1171), is famous for his radical interpretations of the Talmud and his influence in matters of Halakhah. Less well known is his abiding interest in the textual transmission of the Talmud and its manuscripts. Rabbenu Tam was well aware of the redactional layers within the Talmud, and in many instances, claimed that certain sentences were a later addition to the Talmud inserted by students and copyists over the generations. As a result, Rabbenu Tam did not hesitate to challenge the binding legal authority of those accretions. The introduction to Rabbenu Tam's Sefer ha-yashar argues that the received text of the Babylonian Talmud was corrupt and that the text had been influenced by glosses suggested by Rashi and other sages. In his opinion, textual corrections ought to be raised in the context of commentaries and not inserted within the Talmud itself. This article will describe the relationship between the principles proposed ...

Rabbi Jacob ben Meir (France, 1100–1171), Rashi’s maternal grandson, is the rabbinic sage best known as Rabbenu Tam.1 Rabbenu Tam is known to students of the Talmud as a Tosafist. He is cited some 2,700 times in the Tosafot that are printed alongside the Talmud itself in traditional printings; this fact, on its own, attests to his interpretive power and his great renown among Talmud students throughout history.2 Rabbenu Tam’s commentary addresses various
