You may have seen in the media the incident where a manager in the independent ambulance sector had his case dismissed despite exceeding the speed limit. The individual involved had no clinical qualifications and was driving an unmarked, 440bhp car at 90mph, covert blue-lights were fitted to the vehicle.   The case was dismissed as no evidence was offered by the Crown Prosecution Service. Notwithstanding, our understanding is that the Department for Transport (DfT) is drafting wording to address the ‘grey area’ on the interpretation of “ambulance purposes” within Section 19 of the 1984 Road Traffic Act.   At their recent Board meeting, IAA Directors agreed to publish a statement distancing the Association and our Members from the egregious use of speed, whose actions undermine the reputation responsible providers in the sector work hard to maintain. Prisons declare population emergencies amid ‘permacrisis’ 👇 Seven prisons in Scotland have declared a ‘red risk’ amid soaring numbers of inmates. The Scottish branch of the Prison Governors Association has written to MSPs to raise fresh concerns about the “crisis”, calling for emergency release measures and greater use of electronic monitoring. The proposed measures are likely to be controversial, but projections suggest the population behind bars is on course to increase even further – impacting on rehabilitation attempts. Numbers are already at their highest level since 2019, hovering around 8,200, while the remand population – awaiting trial or sentence – has nearly doubled over the past five years to around 2,000. This is largely due to major backlogs in the court system. Scottish ministers have predicted that as many as 8,450 people could be behind bars by next month, causing significant overcrowding and requiring cells to hold more people than they are designed for. Of the country’s 17 jails, the Prison Governors Association said seven have declared what it calls a 'red risk status'. In a letter to Holyrood's criminal justice committee, chair Natalie Beal wrote: "Our members are working in a state of 'permacrisis', working with constant pressures due to the mix of population complexity and physical numbers." The observations around retention etc are worrying and the decline in public sector pay an obvious problem. The recommendation around the starting pay point in the Met will have serious implications for forces in the Home Counties and BTP. The recommendations apply only to Home Department forces. Even though the rates of pay of Non Home Dept Forces are tied to that set for HD Forces the Review Body has no remit to consider their position, nor to they take evidence from them. Forces, such as BTP, that mirror the pay settlements given to Home Department forces only do so by agreement - there is no statutory pay parity and the allowances and pensions are increasingly different. Further enforcement action – Failure to obtain Director Identification Numbers Further to our article dated 15 April 2024, detailing ASIC’s first prosecution for failure to have a Director Identification Number (DIN), a pair of Western Australian directors have also been convicted and fined for the same offence. Alexander Henry and Luke David Mason were convicted on 3 May 2024 for failing to obtain a DIN in accordance with the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth). Mr Henry and Mr Mason were each fined $5,000 plus costs, and have until 31 May 2024 to apply to have their convictions set aside. A British citizen has been charged by the Counter Terrorism Command after a raid on Bank Holiday Monday, where an anti-terror unit discovered ‘dirty bomb’ materials in the 31-year old’s home. A ‘dirty bomb’ combines chemical explosives with radioactive materials, spreading radioactive materials through the air and onto people, streets, buildings, parks, and any surfaces within a certain range. Once airborne, hazardous chemicals from dirty bombs are often invisible and extremely difficult to detect. Not all heroes wear capes. Every night, our guards and mobile patrol officers play a crucial role in maintaining security and safety during the odd hours, often facing challenging and unpredictable situations.  But sometimes, unfavourable situations arise that challenge our officers to go above and beyond in the face of the unexpected.  Here’s how our brave team members’ quick response and quick thinking prevented an already difficult situation from getting worse. A fire erupted in a factory adjacent to our client's premises, causing a series of significant explosions that resulted in massive debris entering our client's site. Acting swiftly, our vigilant security guard, Shailender promptly responded to the situation by extinguishing the fire at the point where the debris had breached our client's property. Realising the severity of the situation, the guard immediately initiated the emergency protocol by calling the Quick Response Team (QRT) and notifying the local fire brigade. Despite the inherent dangers, the guard prioritized personal safety while effectively managing the crisis. Recognizing the importance of timely communication, the guard promptly informed our client about the incident, ensuring they were aware of the ongoing situation. Meanwhile, the QRT, trained to handle emergencies of this nature, swiftly took charge of securing the site and ensuring the safety of both the premises and the guard. Throughout the incident, the QRT maintained constant communication with the client, providing detailed updates on the status of the response efforts and reassuring them of the measures being taken to mitigate any potential risks. #SARStats For the year ending 30 June 2024, there were 346 SAR incidents where the missing person had a cognitive impairment. Of those, 152 required a search and rescue operation to find the missing person. There were 26 search and rescue operations that were resolved because the person was wearing a WanderSearch pendant. These pendants contain a small radio frequency transmitter, which can be picked up by Land Search and Rescue New Zealand teams using specialist equipment. Brain injuries, neurological illness, dementia and intellectual disability are all examples of cognitive impairment. Previously, we have used the term 'wanderer' to describe people with cognitive impairment who go missing. Which side of the fence ? If you ever wondered which side of the fence you sit on, this is a great test!  If a Conservative doesn't like guns, he doesn’t buy one.  If a Liberal doesn't like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.   If a Conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn’t eat meat.  If a Liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.   If a Conservative is homosexual, he quietly leads his life.  If a Liberal is homosexual, he demands legislated respect.   If a Conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation.  A Liberal wonders who is going to take care of him.   If a Conservative doesn't like a talk show host, he switches channels.  Liberals demand that those they don't like be shut down.   If a Conservative is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church.  A Liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced. If a Conservative decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it.  A Liberal demands that the rest of us pay for his.   If a Conservative reads this, he'll forward it so his friends.  A Liberal will delete it because he's "offended"..............

592,800 is.. .. Six full MCG crowds. .. 4% of all Australian LinkedIn users. .. More than the number of cars registered in all of Tasmania (190,000). .. A quarter of the number of people served in McDonald's every day (2m). .. The same as the number of Subaru's on Australian roads. I don't know how else to put it, but when we look at unemployment as "just" 4.1% we miss the humanity. We miss the meaning and enormity of the number. The families struggling. The parents quietly crying themselves to sleep. Or not sleeping at all. The kids missing out on school excursions, the shoes they need, the sport they're desperate to play. The 592,800 people waking up each day hoping to hear back from a recruiter, from the job they applied for. And for hope. I just don't know how else to put into perspective that 4.1% is not the number we should be focussing on. I'm grateful that organisations like Project Placed are here to help as many of the 592,800 as we can. ------------------------------------------- What do I want you to do? If you're one of the 592,800 please know you're seen and not alone. Come talk to our team at Project Placed. If you know one of the 592,800 tell them to come talk to us. Be kind.
