🎤🙌 It's festival season! Did you know? Music festivals across Europe are using renewable electricity to power their parties! 1️⃣ - #RockWerchter (🇧🇪) and Bolt installed the first-ever wind turbine at a Belgian festival. The 20-meter-tall turbine supplied an average of 110 kWh of electricity per day. They also added a solar installation covering 170m2 to supply the festival with solar power. Three super batteries collected the electricity and stored it. Rock Werchter said two stages in the festival ran entirely on locally generated green power, significantly reducing the use of diesel generators. 📷 Stein Van der Looij 2️⃣ - #Glastonbury (🇬🇧) and Octopus Energy partnered to install ‘Gusty Spinfield’- a 28-meter-tall turbine. 'Gusty' powered the food vendors - feeding up to 300 fridges with #renewableelectricity. And that's not all, Greg Jackson, founder of Octopus Energy, made his Glastonbury stage debut and talked about how renewable electricity is revolutionising communities and driving sustainability within the music industry. 📷 Octopus Energy 3️⃣ - Paradise City Festival (🇧🇪) and Eneco Belgium worked hand in hand to run the festival on 66% renewable energy. How did they achieve that? 33% of the energy comes from the 372m2 solar panels spread across the grounds and the pond surrounding the festival. The remaining 33% came from a green electric cabin which got its power from a local #solar panel park. They also had battery containers that stored the energy generated by solar panels. The Contrast Stage was 99.22% powered by solar energy. The International Greener Future Awards named it the most sustainable festival in the world in 2024. 📷 Paradise City Festival & Eneco Belgium 4️⃣ - Mad Cool festival (🇪🇸) and Iberdrola Renewables achieved the full #electrification of their stages with 100% green energy. They also reduced and optimised energy use through efficient lighting. They had LED technology to light up the bars, tents, gathering areas, and VIP zones. Dua Lipa, Sum 41 and Avril Lavigne are some of the big names that performed on the 100% sustainable stages. 📷 Iberdrola Music Pieterjan Verhaeghen Trippin Esther Koshari Jimmy Demeyer Resident Advisor DJ Mag

🇬🇧👏 UPDATE: the new UK Government under Prime Minister Keir Starmer is showing impressive determination on #windenergy. 🏃♂️💨 It's hard to keep up with the speed of new developments in the #UK. Just yesterday the Government raised the budget for the upcoming contract for difference auction round (AR6) to a record £1.56bn. The majority of that, £1.1bn, will be available for bottom-fixed offshore wind. "This will strengthen the UK's #energy security and increase its economic #competitiveness. It will also help to create tens of thousands of new #jobs in wind energy and restore the UK as a global leader in #renewables”, says Phil Cole, Director of Industrial Affairs at WindEurope. But that’s not all. The Government has also lifted the de-facto ban on onshore wind in England and wants to advance seabed leases in a new collaboration between GB Energy and The Crown Estate. Our second news piece on the UK within just a few weeks summarises the latest developments: https://lnkd.in/e72vKMfe 📸 Photo credit: © x/Ed Miliband

📈 Historic: #wind and #solar overtook EU fossil electricity generation! Ember's new electricity report highlights a great milestone for #renewables in Europe. For the first time, the EU generated more electricity from wind and solar than from fossil fuels in the first six months of the year. Wind and solar provided 30% of electricity, compared to 27% from fossil fuels. We must keep the momentum and further accelerate the growth of renewables to reach the EU's climate neutrality target. The EU wants wind energy to be more than 50% of all electricity generated by 2050, up from around 20% today. To deliver on its targets, the EU now has to do five things with urgent priority: invest massively in electricity #grids, accelerate #permitting, electrify heavy #industry, ensure a level playing field for Europe’s clean tech #manufacturing, and focus #innovation on scaling up proven renewable technologies. More information on these five priorities for the next five years: https://lnkd.in/ehyxSKAr

✅🇪🇸 Spain approves 2.7 GW of new #windenergy 📅 Just in time for an important 25 July deadline Spain has authorised 43 new wind energy projects with a total capacity of 2.7 GW. This brings the total capacity of wind energy projects with environmental and construction approvals in Spain to more than 10 GW. 🏗️The projects should receive other final approvals soon and will be built before the end of 2028. This brings Spain closer - though not yet on track - to meeting the wind energy target under its National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP). The NECP foresees a doubling of Spain's current wind energy capacity to 62 GW - and a share of more than 80% clean energy in Spain's total #electricity consumption by 2030. ⚡ Alongside these projects, the Spanish authorities approved more than 20 GW of new solar capacity and 600 MW of pumped-storage hydropower ahead of the deadline. Now that more renewables are being built Spain needs to create sufficient demand for renewable electricity. This means electrifying mobility, heating and industry. Direct #electrification is the fastest and most efficient way to decarbonise. 👷 The newly approved projects will help grow Spain's renewables supply chain in a sustainable way. According to a conservative estimate building them will generate around 300,000 #jobs – more than 41,000 jobs associated with wind energy. Many of these jobs will be created in rural and underprivileged areas. There are some people one cannot imagine will ever be gone. Prof Arthouros Zervos is one of them. As one of the fathers of WindEurope and a long-standing Chair and President of our association, he truly believed in a world powered by wind. His vision and passion combined with his (positive) stubbornness were instrumental to the journey WindEurope has taken. It is with deepest sadness that we learnt today of Prof Arthouros Zervos's passing. He will always be remembered as a pioneer of Europe's energy transition. Thank you for everything you have done for our industry and our association, Arthouros 🖤. 📸 Our photo shows Prof Zervos at an EWEC conference in Athens in 2006.

🎖️ Green medal to Paris for being the first Olympics powered 100% by wind and solar. All the electricity that’s consumed at the different stadiums, venues and athletes’ facilities is coming from 6 wind farms and 2 solar parks run by EDF. EDF are a Premium Partner of the Games and have signed a Power Purchase Agreement with the organisers covering the next 2 weeks and the Paralympics. The wind farms and solar parks are spread across France so they can max out on whatever the weather’s doing. They include Chemin-d’Ablis, one of France’s largest #windfarms between Orléans and Chartres. ⚡ Crucially, the organisers have connected all the Olympic sites to the electricity grid - with the help of the distribution system operator Enedis. Major sports facilities and big events like pop music festivals normally run on diesel generators. But for Paris 2024 the latter will only be there for emergency back-up. Take note, events organisers - you don’t have to run on diesel ! The Paris 2024 facilities will also be more #energyefficient than ever before. The lighting systems will use LED technology which will use 80% less power than standard lighting. And that's not all … EDF is deploying a photovoltaic carport at the bus station and a floating mobile #solarfarm on the Seine - all of which can be reused after the Games.
