🚨Out now - Wind energy data for Europe: Autumn 2024 🆕📊WindEurope’s newest data report reveals that #Europe built 6.4 GW of new wind farms in the first half of the year. Germany built the most with 1.7 GW, followed by France 1.2 GW and Spain 876 MW. Which brings Europe to 278 GW of #windpower capacity. This autumn update outlines the latest data for #windenergy our expectations for the rest of the decade. Other findings reveals that turbine orders increased by 11% from 2023 and auction volumes are strong with 19.7 GW of new capacity awarded. But challenges are holding back progress: grid bottlenecks, delays in permitting, and difficulties in securing big investments. What needs to happen next? 1. Grid expansion: New connections and grid updates must be fast-tracked to keep up with the growing capacity. 2. Permitting: While some countries like Germany are making progress, others need to catch up and fully implement the new EU rules. 3. Ports: Investments in infrastructure are essential to support the increase in offshore wind projects. Get the full report 👉 https://lnkd.in/emJhkjDf

Montel weekly podcast - Criticism mounts as Sweden axes 32 GW offshore wind At the start of November, the Swedish government announced that it was vetoing plans for 13 offshore wind farms in the Baltic Sea due to security concerns. The announcement was met with much criticism from developers and lobby groups who felt blindsided by the cancellations and concerned about what this decision suggests about Sweden’s future energy priorities. In this episode, Richard speaks to WindEurope about their fears regarding Sweden’s decision and discusses the nuances of Sweden’s Ministry of Defence with Defence Consultant and former Swedish Air Force Lieutenant Colonel. 🇺🇦 Since the start of the war in Ukraine, the European renewables industry has been actively providing the support needed to ensure that electricity continues to flow to where it’s needed. At #COP29 on the Ukrainian Pavilion, Director-General of the European Commission’s DG NEAR, Gert Jan Koopman, underlined Europe’s continued commitment and the need for new approaches as the need for electricity in the country continues to grow. International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) presented their renewable energy outlook for 5 of the Eastern Partnership countries, highlighting the technical potential for 328 GW of wind energy across Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. “Eastern Partnership countries have the opportunity to apply the learnings from other European countries right from the start. Stable policy, clear and viable auction design, digitalised permitting processes and forward planning of grids will ensure the deployment of renewables at pace” says Phil Cole, Director of Industrial Affairs at WindEurope. WindEurope will continue to support the work of the European Commission and the Eastern Partnership countries to deliver their energy transition potential. 🇪🇺 🇦🇿 The EU and Azerbaijan want to connect with a green energy corridor. A cable under the Caucasus and Black Sea bringing offshore wind to Europe. WindEurope met with the Energy Ministers of Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Georgia and Azerbaijan at #COP29 to discuss how and next steps. The 5 countries have set up a joint venture to take things forward. The European Commission, European Investment Bank (EIB), and EBRD are part of the dialogue. The cable will be up to 4 GW. Allowing the transfer of 20-30 TWh of offshore wind from the Caspian to Europe. 💶 🖋 We discussed the business model and financing with the Ministers. The need for clarify on what needs to be built by when and what the revenue model is going be. Which probably means defining who’s going to consume the electricity. The EU also needs to do its own homework - reinforcing the relevant onshore grids and ensuring the necessary European interconnector capacity and that it’s properly used. "WindEurope support the plans for an EU-Azerbaijan Green energy corridor. Many European companies are ready to help build and operate it. The key thing now is to work out the financing and business model.” says Giles Dickson CEO of WindEurope WindEurope signed an MoU with the Azerbaijan Renewable Energy Agency earlier this year which is the basis for the European wind industry’s input to the planning of the corridor.

💭 💂♂️ The UK are standing out at #ᴄᴏᴘ29 as a champion of climate ambition. Great announcement from Keir Starmer on their 2035 target - and specific support for wind industry. WindEurope was really pleased to meet with Lee McDonough Director-General at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. They discussed several topics such as strengthening EU-UK cooperation through the North Seas Energy Cooperation (NSEC) framework. This closer engagement is key for Europe’s renewable energy and climate goals. Plenty of opportunities lie ahead for UK onshore wind with existing offshore initiatives. Kudos to Chris Stark and the Mission Control team for tackling barriers to renewable deployment—wind industry, they’re listening to us! Also, shout-out to OFGEM for green-lighting the LionLink and Nautilus interconnectors yesterday. This will be boosting connectivity and energy resilience. 🇸🇪🖐 Sweden halts 13 offshore wind projects The Swedish Government cancelled 13 offshore wind projects due to military defence concerns. The announcement came unexpectedly. It is highly problematic. It is yet another setback for Sweden’s offshore wind ambitions. It undermines investors' trust in the Swedish Government. It puts Sweden’s industrial competitiveness at risk. And it is a serious blow to Sweden’s wider energy security targets. 💬 “Yet again Sweden is bottom of the class on offshore wind. The Swedish Government has been unhelpful on offshore wind for many years. But a plain ban on offshore wind development in large parts of the Baltic Sea is unheard of. This makes no sense, not least when all the other countries around the Baltic Sea want to build more offshore wind and are progressing well on it”, says Giles Dickson, WindEurope CEO. 👇 Read our statement in the comments section. 📷 The below map gives an overview of Swedish offshore wind projects.
