Last week, the Timelex team enjoyed an adventurous team-building retreat in the Ardennes. Through various outdoor activities, we not only strengthened our teamwork and communication skills but - more importantly - had a great deal of fun together! 

On 17 October 2024 at 14.00 CEST, the ARICA project, of which Timelex is a part, is organizing a Law Enforcement only webinar on the white paper it produced as part of its EU-wide legislation monitoring activity. The white paper discusses three of the main current legal challenges in open source investigations of CSAE on the dark web, common to LEAs across the EU:   - Challenge 1: the procedural legality of the use of OSINT in CSAE investigations on the dark web; - Challenge 2: the rules of the recently adopted AI Act and their impact on AI-driven OSINT tools to be used for CSAE investigations on the dark web; - Challenge 3: the impact of the data protection rules of the Law Enforcement Directive (LED) on the use of OSINT tools in CSAE investigations on the dark web. Since 1 January 2023, we have been working on the DNS4EU project. DNS4EU is set to provide a secure, privacy-compliant, and powerful recursive Domain Name System (DNS). The European Union's DNS4EU initiative strengthens European sovereignty by offering a safe and open alternative DNS resolver for EU citizens, businesses, and public administrations, with the expertise of 13 partners from 10 European countries. Timelex, as the legal and ethical partner of DNS4EU, is currently working on: • Advising on telecoms security and confidentiality by proposing measures and policies to guarantee privacy by design and by default.   • Conducting a data protection impact assessment (DPIA), to evaluate the implications of data processing on user privacy, in compliance with e-privacy, GDPR, and other applicable laws.  • Assessing new and forthcoming legislation to propose and implement necessary enhancements for compliance in the evolving regulatory landscape,  • Assisting with the public and internal policies to guarantee transparency in data logging, retention, and anonymization processes,   • Assisting with the data management plan for the responsible use of data. Since June 2023, we've been proud partners in the PREVENT project, aiming to prevent cancer by addressing childhood obesity. Through dedicated research in schools, PREVENT is working towards a future where every child enjoys a healthier lifestyle.  As the legal and ethical partner, Timelex is leading crucial efforts, including: • Providing comprehensive guidance on processing children’s personal data in social research activities;  • Navigating the complexities of obtaining consent from children and their parents as per GDPR and ethical standards;  • Drafting the Joint Controllership Arrangement to ensure compliant data-sharing among project partners;  • Establishing a robust data management framework, including drafting the data management plan and conducting Data Protection Impact Assessments;  • Creating GDPR-compliant privacy policies and notices for the PREVENT website, surveys, and consent forms;  • Evaluating the lawfulness of AI models and digital tools used in schools for data collection in line with the AI Act. Since 2024, we have been involved in the CyclOps project. CyclOps ties in with the European Strategy for Data, which aims to create a single market for data while ensuring Europe's global competitiveness and data sovereignty. The Common European data spaces developed as part of this strategy require a systematic and standardized mechanism to ingest, integrate, and process data, thus boosting the ability to develop new data-centric business models.    CyclOps proposes a new framework for the governance and maintenance of the complete data lifecycle for large-scale volumes of data generated in heterogeneous distributed sources to enable data sharing and exchange. It intelligently automates, by means of knowledge graphs (KGs) and with a human-in-the-loop approach, the generation and execution of data processing pipelines. CyclOps will enable organizations to seamlessly provide, cross and analyze machine- and human-generated data from and for data spaces, thus facilitating the provision of added-value services on top. Timelex leads the legal and ethical work in the project, in particular facilitating the data protection compliance, and the project’s overall legal and ethical compliance – e.g. in terms of the use of data and AI. Criminals are quick to use and adapt technology to their advantage. It must be assessed how police can equally leverage the capacities of the technology to fulfil their duties in this domain, taking into account their limited resources and the need to remain in compliance with national and European law. Check out the white paper that discusses three of the main current legal challenges in open source investigations of CSAE on the dark web, common to LEAs across the EU. Since 2022, we have been involved in the BeFlexible project. BeFlexible aims to increase the flexibility of the energy system, to improve cooperation between Distribution System Operators (DSOs) and Transmission System Operators (TSOs) and to facilitate the participation of all energy-related stakeholders. To address these challenges, the project consortium brings together 21 partners and 3 affiliated entities from 7 different European countries, including DSOs, TSOs, aggregators, R&D centres and Universities specialised in the technology applied in the solutions, industrial suppliers of smart grid technology providers and ICT developers. Since 2022, we have been involved in the CONVINCE project. The main goal of the project is to develop and verify cognitive deliberation capabilities that ensure safe robot operation over extended periods of time without human intervention and to integrate these capabilities into a model-driven software toolchain for robot developers. These capabilities will: -determine robot’s behaviors required to fulfill a given task, also taking into account the context in which the robot operates, and the experience gained during previous executions of the same task,  -deploy and configure the components that are required to execute these behaviors,  -automate the analysis of behaviors to ensure that they are safe and secure, leveraging on formal models and tools for design-time and run-time verification. Timelex leads the legal and ethical work in the project, ensuring compliance of the project with applicable data protection legislation, both at the EU level through the GDPR and at the level of residual national legislation. Since April 2021, we have been working on the REBECCA project, an innovative eHealth initiative that combines clinical data with real-life behavioral data to optimize patient care and improve the quality of life for breast cancer survivors. The project aims to enhance patient care and quality of life by integrating clinical data with real-life behavioral data (e.g. physical activity, eating habits, sleep, and online interactions). By leveraging mobile apps and wearable devices, REBECCA collects these new forms of Real-World Data (#RWD) to produce novel functional and emotional indices for each individual. These indices are instrumental in optimizing patient care and complementing outcomes during clinical research. In addition, the REBECCA platform will provide an infrastructure for continued progress in the use of RWD beyond the end of the project.   As such, REBECCA raises several ethical and privacy concerns, which Timelex helps address.
