🕊️ Today is Peace, Relief, and Recovery Day at #COP29 – a crucial moment to recognize that climate action and peace go hand in hand. That’s why we are calling for climate action to be conflict-sensitive and for peace to be a priority at the ongoing COP and upcoming COPs. We, as part of the Peace@COP collective, have put together a policy paper providing recommendations for involving peace in climate action negotiations. Discover our recommendations for mitigating military environmental and climate impacts, fostering community engagement in climate programs, allocating loss and damage funds to vulnerable communities, and including youth in climate and peacebuilding efforts, as well as how conflict sensitivity can be integrated into climate initiatives and how we can move toward a Green Transition in conflict-affected areas.👇 🔗 Read our policy brief at: https://lnkd.in/eP6CZThh #PeaceAtCOP

QCEA brings a vision of peace, justice and equality to Europe and its institutions.
About us
QCEA promotes Quaker values at the European level. We advocate non-violent approaches to conflict resolution, promote policies that respect the intrinsic equality of all people everywhere, and try to ensure that European policy sustains the planet’s resources and the lives of all those who share them. We have represented European Quakers in Brussels since 1979. The EU is one of the most successful peace projects in history, but we are in a time of real danger for the peaceful and humanitarian values that have been institutionalised over the last 70 years. The response to the migration crisis is the biggest human rights issue in Europe at present, yet European nations and governments are failing to meet the very standards they helped create. If there was ever a time for Quakers to bring our voice and our expertise to discussions about fundamental rights and justice, it is now. In October 2016, QCEA re-launched our Peace Programme. It seeks to bring a new approach to the daunting security challenges that Europe faces today. It aims at offering a comprehensive approach to security, where society is at the centre, and providing alternative views and solutions to conflict prevention and resolution to policy and decision makers. At the heart of this new vision of security is non-military peacebuilding. 🌍 Common Principles at COP29 for Climate Action, Relief, and Peace People in the world’s most vulnerable places cannot wait for the ‘right’ conditions to adapt to climate change. Climate action in these settings is possible and can offer avenues for conflict prevention, inclusive peacebuilding and sustainable development. At COP29, the #PeaceAtCop community has come together behind a set of Common Principles for Effective Climate Finance and Action for Relief, Recovery, and Peace. The principles call us to: 1. Understand people and place for enduring, impactful outcomes. 2. Be agile to maintain and boost resilience. 3. Prioritise local ownership and leadership by affected groups. 4. Support collaboration and synergies. The principles call us to action to ensure that climate finance and action are agile, inclusive, and accountable, helping to build the foundation for resilient development and inclusive peacebuilding in the most vulnerable communities. 🌍 Now is the time to ensure that climate finance reaches the people and places who need it most. 🚨 Brown Bag Lunch 🚨 Conscientious Objection: A Peace and a Human Rights Issue The case of Belarus Conscientious objection is often neglected as a way of responding to violent conflict and as a human rights issue. QCEA is hosting this event to highlight why it is an important issue in relation to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and how conscientious objectors and those who are protecting them are being treated in Europe today. Zaira Zafarana, who has been advocating for the rights of conscientious objectors at the UN, will give an overview of the situation and challenges for COs and deserters in Europe and ongoing current solidarity actions and campaigns to support them. Olga Karach will talk about the situation of Belarusian conscientious objectors in Belarus and Lithuania, the risks and threats they face, including the recognition of conscientious objectors to military service as a threat to Lithuania's national security, the risks of their deportation back to Belarus to prison, and the pressure faced by Belarusian human rights defenders and pacifists in Lithuania to defend Belarusian conscientious objectors and deserters (using her own case). This is an informal event with opportunity to ask questions and discuss the issues and how they can be addressed more broadly. 🗓 Date: 23 October 2024 🕕 Time: 12:30 - 13:30 📍 Location: Quaker House, Brussels 👉 Register now at [email protected]
