The EU's latest sanctions package hits Russian LNG imports, marking a key step in reducing Europe's energy reliance on Russia. But there's one major sector still largely untouched – Russian #aluminium. 🤔 ➡️ The European aluminium industry has proven it can manage without Russian imports, cutting dependence on Russian imports by 35% in 2023. Russia now holds just an 8% market share of the EU's aluminium ingot imports in 2024. 📉 It's time for the EU to go all in! Let’s extend sanctions to include all major aluminium product categories, from ingots to slabs and billets. This move will further cut economic support for actions against European values and boost our #madeineurope industry. 💪 We’ve shown that decoupling from Russia is possible – now, let’s make it happen fully! 📢

Today, newly elected MEPs gather for their first session in Strasbourg! ✨ We look forward to collaborating with MEPs to build a resilient, environmentally conscious, and globally competitive European aluminium industry. To ensure Europe continues to benefit from locally produced, sustainable aluminium, we need a strong and visionary #EUIndustrialDeal that builds on the #EUGreenDeal. Top priorities also include a revitalised EU trade policy with stronger defences against unfair trade, internationally competitive green energy prices, and support for industrial decarbonisation. 👉 To achieve a thriving aluminium industry in Europe, we have outlined 5 key policy priorities. Discover them here: https://lnkd.in/eC4CE8ku MEPs, we count on your support to lay the groundwork for a sustainable future! Giulia Forgnone

#DYK that 40% of the EU's energy consumption comes from buildings? 🏨 With the EU facing an energy crisis, making our buildings energy-efficient is more important than ever. Our Director of Engineered Products & Business Development, Bernard Gilmont, emphasises the importance of the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (#EPBD) and Minimum Energy Performance Standards (#MEPS) in addressing this challenge. So, what's the solution? A real and effective Renovation Wave! 🏗️ This initiative is key to meeting the EU’s 2030 and 2050 climate targets, and it should continue to be a top priority in the next legislative cycle. 🗞️ Don't miss out—subscribe to our #Aluminium4Europe newsletter to stay informed! #buildings #EURenovationWave

#TBT to our participation at the Antwerp Dialogue on effective trade policy to combat European deindustrialisation and global overcapacities, hosted by AEGIS Europe and industriAll Europe last week! 🌍💼 China's subsidised overcapacity challenges the European #aluminium industry, creating an unfair market. Key takeaways included: 🔹 A pragmatic approach to EU trade defence is essential. This includes initiating more ex-officio cases, assertively implementing existing EU Trade Defence Instruments (TDIs) and preventing the circumvention of trade measures. 🔹 Developing additional measures, such as tariffs, is necessary to counteract unfair trade practices, especially those originating from non-market economies. These insights are crucial for guiding EU policies to protect Europe’s raw materials industries✅ We look forward to future Dialogues to strengthen our call for a real European Industrial Deal to complement the Green Deal! 📢 #AntwerpDialogue #TradePolicy

It’s time for the EU to completely decouple from Russian metal! 📢 The EU’s downstream #aluminium producers face increasing challenges compared to regions like the U.S., which already has protective measures against products made with discounted Russian ingots. Addressing this is vital for a fair competitive landscape and honouring our global commitment to reduce Russia’s revenue from metals🏭 That’s why it’s crucial to introduce comprehensive sanctions on Russian aluminium, including ingots, slabs, and billets. These categories represent over 85% of the EU's aluminium imports from Russia. To fully decouple and protect our industry's competitiveness, Russian aluminium must be included in the next sanctions package ✅ #russiansanctions #BanRussianAluminium

Today in Budapest, the Council of the European Union's Ministers gathered for an informal meeting to discuss crucial aspects of competitiveness in the EU 📢 During today's discussions, the ministers focused on electric vehicle (#EV) production, the Antwerp Declaration, and the implications of Enrico Letta’s recent report on strengthening Europe's Single Market. A few months ago, we have signed the Antwerp Declaration to show our commitment to strengthening #competitiveness, promoting sustainability, fostering innovation, and addressing global challenges such as energy costs and market dynamics that impact our industry. As part of this dialogue, we want to stress our support for creating a strong EU Competitiveness Deal that builds on the European Green Deal. We look forward to the outcomes of today's meeting and remain committed to advocating for measures that strengthen our industry while advancing our decarbonisation goals ✅ 📄Join us and sign the Antwerp Declaration ➡️ https://lnkd.in/e8iqT6E2 #industry #sustainability

Yesterday, we participated in the Antwerp Dialogue on shaping an effective trade policy to combat deindustrialisation in Europe and address global overcapacities, organised by AEGIS Europe and industriAll Europe! 🌍💼 A special thanks to Norsk Hydro and Bruno D'hondt for representing our industry! Addressing overcapacity is of crucial importance for the European #aluminium industry as subsidised industrial overcapacity in China poses a fundamental threat to our sector. Over the past few decades, China's non-market practices have created an unfair playing field. Their use of subsidies and low pricing has led to a surge of Chinese products in our markets, lowering the competitiveness of European producers. For aluminium, overcapacity began a few years ago in the primary segment and has since extended to semi-transformation and recycling. Today, it also impacts several finished products containing aluminium, such as #BEVs and #solar panels. Chinese overcapacity for semi-finished aluminium products is equivalent to three times the entire EU demand for these products. ✅Our key messages included: 🔹 A pragmatic approach to EU trade defence is essential. 📄Want to know more about our stance on overcapacity?
