🌍 Meet our #TeamLocalEurope! With the names of the new European Commissioners still to be presented this week, cities are already one step ahead. Led by Burkhard Jung, Mayor of Leipzig and President of Eurocities, mayors and deputy mayors from across Europe successfully formed a gender-balanced body to act as direct counterparts to the incoming European Commission College. 📢 As Burkhard Jung emphasises: “The issues we face – from the rise of populism to climate change and refugee integration – require EU-level solutions implemented locally. The Eurocities Shadow Commission will make sure our voices are heard, and together, we will build a more inclusive, sustainable, and dynamic Europe.” #Ifmayorsruledtheworld

💡 How can city governments harness public innovation to tackle today's biggest challenges? At a high-profile meeting in the European Parliament this week, Eurocities, LSE Cities and Bloomberg Philanthropies launched a major new report analysing city government innovation across Europe. The report - 'Public Innovation: Building Capacity in Europe’s City Governments' – is based on a Eurocities Pulse Survey of 65 chief innovation officers in European cities and seven in-depth city case studies. The report finds: 🔹 City governments are innovating how they work to tackle urgent challenges, including climate change and social inequalities. 🔹 However, cities face organisational barriers that limit their innovation capacity, including funding constraints and a lack of long-term strategies. 🔹 To overcome these challenges, cities need ambitious political leaders who prioritise innovation. 🔹 They also need to improve data analysis, and strengthen private and public partnerships. 🔹 City governments call for ambitious political commitments and EU funding, to strengthen their structures and secure investment in public innovation. Commenting on the findings, Ben Rogers, Bloomberg Distinguished Fellow in Government Innovation, LSE Cities, stated: "Cities won’t achieve the outcomes we need without further support and a long-term focus on building their innovation capacity.” André Sobczak, Eurocities Secretary General, said: "The new report calls on the EU, national governments, and philanthropic organisations to champion urban innovation, underscoring that cities are pivotal to achieving Europe’s sustainability and social goals." Thanks to all speakers at the event, including our host Pierfrancesco Maran MEP, Matúš Vallo, Gaia Romani, James Anderson, and Judita Rozsa, Acting Director General of DG REFORM. This morning, Raffaele Fitto takes part in his confirmation hearing as EU Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms. It is a positive development to have an EU Vice-President with a portfolio focused on cities 👏 This is something Eurocities and our members have long called for. At last, it is recognition of cities’ key role in localising EU objectives. Commissioner-designate Fitto ➡ we are ready to work alongside you on an ambitious policy agenda for cities that brings real change. It must tackle the structural challenges between the EU and cities, and involve all EU Commissioners and the new European Parliament in finding solutions. You can read our in-depth assessment ‘How the EU can work better with cities’ 👉 https://lnkd.in/eZv-MhtV We are also deeply worried about the future of EU #CohesionPolicy. Commissioner-designate Fitto ➡ we appreciate your recognition that this policy should be developed with local authorities, but we expect more substance to show Cohesion Policy will not be centralised and nationalised. The Eurocities Shadow Commission is ready to work with you to ensure the future Cohesion Policy delivers. You can read our new policy statement, with clear recommendations from city leaders 👉 https://lnkd.in/eYgE7-gG Last but not least, Commissioner-designate Fitto ➡ we count on you to ensure your policy agenda will be supported with tools and resources to deliver on the ground. You must promote a strong urban dimension in the next Cohesion Policy, and also the wider #EUbudget. To meet the challenges of competitiveness, sustainability and inclusiveness, a better Europe starts in cities. 🏙 Photo ©EU2024. EC Audiovisual Service. #TeamLocalEurope #LocalFutureEU
