MARCとは？ 現在では図書館の電算化がずいぶん進みました。大きな図書館ではたいてい検索用のコンピュータ端末が並んでいて利用者が自分で本を探しています。以前は本を探す時には、ずらりと並んだカードケースに目当てをつけて一枚一枚カードを繰って探したものです。もちろん今でもそうしている図書館は多いことでしょう。このカードケースに入っているカード（に記されている情報）のすべてをカード目録といいます。 MARCとは、このカード目録をコンピュータに載せたもの、と乱暴に言ってしまってもよいでしょう。MAchine Readable CatalogingというのがMARCの元になった英語です。つまり直訳すると、機械可読目録ということになります。カード目録は人間しか読めないけれど、MARCは機械すなわちコンピュータが読める目録というわけです。 ここまでの話ではMARCという言葉を最も広い意味で使い
